I don't know....on one hand, it's become the social norm to talk about things you're proud of (kids, home, car). The people who are so insecure that that's all they'll talk about - others usually avoid having future conversations with them so it all works out.

Talking about the wife and kids is fine. But when they start bragging about their cars, swanky neighborhoods, how much money they save, and the jewelry they just bought their wives,I start getting annoyed. One guy brags about his mercedes and harley davidson,we all ask him "hey, where's your mercedes and harley?" and he always says."oh,I won't bring them to work."

Proverbs 16:18: "Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall."

OMG,did you see that movie ? :girlwerewolf2xn:

Here are some others that would apply to my work buddies: sloth, gluttony, lust, and greed.

I got groceries this evening. I didn't use food stamps, unlike the rest of you losers.

Food stamps are soooooo passee, people are using the good ol' EBT card now. They did away with the stamps because people were buying non-food items with them.I bought groceries too, but instead of going to "Whole(check)Foods like my mom,I went to save-a-lot.

Sometimes, people interpret conversation that mentions your house or car or expensive gadget for bragging because they're insecure and envious.

Okay, let's see you listen to the same bragging 5 days a week and see how fast you'll get annoyed.

Don't you love the ppl on VJ who have taken one class on a subject and are now experts. OR the people who apparently are so studious that they have read up and thought out every topic imaginable. I wish I could be that smart :)

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

It's so personal what "bragging" constitutes, it's really difficult to say. Some people will consider even the slightest mention of personal fortune as bragging, while others like to mention certain things that they take pride in, like their family, their home, their car, their boat, or whatever else. I'd say that expressing envy negatively over what others take pride in by blaming them of bragging about it is just as bad as bragging just to feel above other people.

I take a lot of pride in my relationship, my job, and my income, as they all represent the fruits of my labour, and the accomplishment of my dreams. I have no trouble expressing this pride, but I would never talk about it for the sole purpose of putting other people in a worse light.

I don't agree. I don't think it's polite to talk about things that you have around people who don't have it, especially if you know it will make them envious.

Like in school when you got an "A" and all your friends got a "C". You just keep your mouth shut. What is the point?

Of course, it also depends on how close you are to the people you are mentioning these things to. You have to know your audience.

And I think it's common sense that mentioning that you have a house does not consititute bragging. Mentioning how much your house is worth is not necessary.

ETA: It's quite possible I'm just weird. People have commented that I can be tight-lipped about personal things to the extreme.

THANK YOU ! I think it's rude to do that also.Especially taking money out of ones pocket and flashing it in people's faces.

People brag as their defense mechanism from their insecurities and to cover up the flaws they have. They feel good when they are praised because somehow that would boost their ego. It's also their way to make themselves acceptable and be recognized in the society or in their circle of friends.

We used to have my husband's two family members (husband and wife team) constantly go on and on about their daughter and her soccer accomplishments. We would sit there and say, "Oh yeah, good", etc etc. Haven't heard the bragging anymore. I guess because we weren't being part of putting this girl on a pedestal like her parents were, the novelty of bragging died out.

Don't get me wrong, it was great about what the girl was achieving, we just didn't need to hear it over and over again at every family event. My son even picked up that this girl was embarrassed by the way her parents were behaving.

Reminds me of

LOL

Their hands are so tired from patting themselves on the back that they need someone else to do it for them.

Also, it's an ego boost when they detect envy.

some ppl thrive off of their ego, and live off of trying to make others envy them....its an insecurity actually

I don't agree. I don't think it's polite to talk about things that you have around people who don't have it, especially if you know it will make them envious.

Kinda depends on the circumstances, doesn't it? If someone asks me how much my house is worth, and how I'm getting by on my payments in this economy, I don't see any issues with telling the person.

Like in school when you got an "A" and all your friends got a "C". You just keep your mouth shut. What is the point?

As it was said before, if you work hard, you're allowed to be elated and tell your friends about it, even if they got Cs. If they can't handle that you're happy that your hard work paid off, then they fall under the category of people who criticise others for bragging simply because they're envious or dissatisfied with their own performance. It's narcissistic to discount or dismiss the idea of letting other people express joy over their achievements simply because they did better than you.

Of course, it also depends on how close you are to the people you are mentioning these things to. You have to know your audience.

Well, obviously my post described what I feel is acceptable to share, not who I feel it's acceptable to share it with. It's a given that you have to know your audience.

And I think it's common sense that mentioning that you have a house does not consititute bragging. Mentioning how much your house is worth is not necessary.

ETA: It's quite possible I'm just weird. People have commented that I can be tight-lipped about personal things to the extreme.

Like you just said, it depends on the audience. There's nothing wrong about mentioning how much your house is worth if the conversation steers in that direction. Categorically denouncing any mention of anything that you have is a symptom of jealousy, not a criticism of bragging.

It truly must be with the help of divine intervention that after entering into this well-defined bureaucratic process, we were blessed with the expected outcome within the predefined timeline. Praise deities!

Again, I totally disagree. And I think it's narcissistic to assume that others are jealous of you because they are put off by your bragging.

I'd be put off by someone bragging about something, even if I have the same thing or something "better". How can that be jealousy?

You think you're "allowed to be elated and tell your friends about it". I think it's in poor taste. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.
