I have been using Webroot Internet Security Essentials since it's release without any problems. It's cheap, $59.95 with a license for three computers. It is not load and forget, though. You need some basic knowledge to use it properly, and keep it in the background, especially the firewall. Otherwise, it can be an freaking nuisance for the novice. But it does keep the wife from trashing the system, and comes with 2GB of free online backup that you can upgrade for an extra charge.

Of the free ones (Avast, Avira or AVG) Avira rates the best. I believe Norton Internet Security 2009 rated best of 'for sale' versions.

See http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/..._guys_like_this

 Good to know. I'm so out of the loop with this stuff....I've been using Ad-Aware, which has done me well for many years.

adaware

it used to be good, but that was a while ago.

i've got symantec corporate for av, webroot spy sweeper and pest patrol for anti-spyware.

I honestly have never felt the need to go high tech with that stuff, given that the best medicine is prevention ...and I steer clear of high risk sites/emails/spam.

you'd be surprised. anti virus don't pick up all the little nits that can come in. one suggestion - dump your cache frequently.

I use the Clean-Up option with WISE to clean all the temp storage areas about once a week. It is amazing how quickly useless, redundant information collects on the hard drive, and how fast things load once that stuff is gone!

I'm getting a new PC [windows Vista] and wondered what's "out there" antivirus program wise.

I've been using Norton for years. Seem to have been OK. They wanted $79 to renew my old Norton 360 program.

Anyone have a better [cheaper] system?

Norton for me is the best!

Internet explorer

you should have an icon on your desktop. it looks like a big blue e. (the below are for internet explorer 7)

put your mouse over it, and make one right click. a small menu should appear, drop down to and select properties.

a box should appear, titled internet properties, with the general properties tab showing.

about in the middle of that box, you should see "BROWSING HISTORY" and two buttons, one labeled "delete" and the other labeled "settings"

click the delete button and another box will show up over the first one. you can individually delete:

-temporary internet files

-cookies

-history

-form data

-passwords

by clicking on any of the above, a small box will appear and ask you to confirm "yes" or "no"

or you can click the "delete all" box and it will dump everything (after clicking the "yes" confirmation button). or you can click "close" and not delete anything.

note: by deleting cookies, you will have to log back into vj or any other website that puts a login cookie on your computer.

Check this out. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=190538 Ad-Aware is no longer a top product. It was a few years ago, but not now. Things can change very quickly.

We use AVG, and it is free and works like a charm.

If you have comcast, they give you free McAffee (or was it norton?) can't recall exactly.

ditto with AVG free edition
