I am having my oath ceremony at a courthouse because of the name change. Is there anything different about having it there? Can i still have guests?

It says on the letter to come at 9.30. How much later would the ceremony actually start? I am not sure what to tell the people I am inviting to attend as my guests.

Call the courthouse and ask them if it is ok to invite guests and if so what time should they be there. That is the only way you are going to know for sure.

Do we really have to go court to change our name when we apply N-400 ? I heard that will happen in the oath ceremony in the immigration office. Why do you have to go court?

I was told there had to be a judge present in my oath ceremony. Then the oath letter says that the ceremony will take place in the courthouse. Maybe sometimes the judge can go to the immigration office, but this time the actual oath will take place at the courthouse.

In my case, they originally scheduled for court house, but later they changed the location to USCIS DO.

I didn't see the judge from oath ceremony.

But it may be special case because USCIS tried to push as many people as they can for presidential election.

I got signed copy of "petition for name change" from USCIS two months later , which was signed by US federal court judge.

What was your name change for?? maiden to married, new name to include, married to maiden name? just asking coz mine was for married name now (all paperworks are still in my old name despite the replacement of GC after i got married) and my oath is at US District Court Central District which happens to be one of the 3 places where the ceremony's gonna take place. The other 2 were at LA Convention Center and LA Fairgrounds. I signed a paper the AO printed with all the infos and new name that would be place on my certificate..

I want my maiden name as my middle name now. It is like this in SS, green card and driver's license, but they say I can't transfer it automatically when becoming a citizen, so I had to request a "legal" name change during the interview.

Ha, just the opposite with my wife, she was using her maiden name, you know, that Smith-Husband last name thing, is on our marriage certificate. She wanted it because she was concerned about using her passport and ID card from her country. But when we registered our marriage in her country, it didn't matter anymore. Also was customary in her country to use both maiden and married names, not customary here.

Then it got very confusing, her maiden name starts with a T her married name with a D, so starting with her I-751, we just dropped her maiden name, just used her married name on the N-400 and that is what is on her certificate, went to SS for her status change and told them to drop that maiden name too, they said no problem. She actually likes her married name far better than her maiden name. Middle names are rarely used here, mostly just your middle initial.

Seems like down south, met many people that use S. Roger Jones as the format, being preferred to be called Roger than Sue. But can't do that on your tax returns.

For me it's mostly for sentimenatal reasons. My maiden name is what connects me to my family back home and even though I still hardly use it in real life, it's nice to know it's there :star:
