Just wanting to give my husband a Brirts perspective of Houston. Please feel free to talk about your pros and cons. How are you finding life in Houston? Any cool hang out places from your point of view? Over all what do you think of life in Houston vs the changes made moving from London? I know there are a few British pubs there as well as a British school for thoes who have kids. Any one checked these out yet?

Pub we've been to many times:

Richmond Arms on Richmond Ave.

They have lots of beers, traditional pub grub, and serve Coleman's mustard, real Heinz beans.

Inside: dark, fireplace, dart boards, picture of Winston Churchill, copies of Brit newspapers, football on the television.

Outside: a deck and picnic style tables with flags painted on the top...World Cup teams maybe. Some umbrella tables. On a busy city street, but made somewhat cozy with hedges, rocky waterfall/fountain thing, and a big oak tree. http://www.richmondarmsonline.com/

Part of somebody's review.."For all intents and purposes, he has put together a reasonable facsimile of a British pub that appeals to all. For the ex-pats who complain that Houston doesn't have a REAL pub, we don't go to the U.K. for Tex-Mex food- one doesn't go to Texas for a real British pub so don't nit pick the details."

I kinda like that sensibility applied to the whole immigration thing. You're not moving here to find UK life so don't nit pick the details.

(or start discussing duvets!)

Spot on. SPOT ON. I cannot ABIDE Brits who go abroad and immediately head straight to the nearest English bar, and take root therein for the duration of their holiday, slagging off the locals, and generally acting like dicks. This is why I avoid chav shitholes like Benidorm and Tenerife like the plague.

An american friend of mine invited me to a pub in St Louis called "The Scottish Arms" during the 2006 World Cup. Both the USA & England national teams were playing that day, so it seemed like a plan. Of course, being a Brit themed bar, there were a fair few Brits in there. I won't bore you with the details of their idiotic behaviour, but suffice to say that when Rob called me later in the week, asking me if I'd like to return to the same establishment to watch another game, I politely declined, stating that I'd much prefer to watch it in a regular American bar with the locals.

Brits abroad (on holiday at least) = retards.

Nich, when me and 'er indoors come down to Texas, please take us somewhere authentically Texan.

Thanks.

LOL, I'm half-dutch/half-English. I find it hilarious that we're having this exact thread about so many of us dutchies around texas, just to find this one going on with my other nationality!

I'm up in Tulsa, but may be working around the GOM for awhile from Galveston to Jackson on a pipelining contract for awhile, saving up some dosh. If I'm round your all way, I'll holler on here and we'll grab a pint!

Plus, I agree wholeheartedly with the "when in Rome do as the Romans do!" statement. I love my new culture of native american heritage, as I live on the Osage indian reservation north of Tulsa. Cowboy hats, a nice gringo 'tache and some menthol copenhagen in my wranglers and I look the part with a stupid accent LMAO!

- OUR TIMELINE -

04/25/08 - sent I-130 to Chicago lockbox

05/05/08 - received NOA1, assigned to VSC

11/07/08 - transferred to CSC

12/22/08 - NVC receive package

01/05/09 - we receive AOS Bill and DS-3032

02/12/09 - medical 04th Mar 2009 - NVC Complete - 314 days

04/28/09 - interview passed - 370 days

06/20/09 - visa arrived by courier

06/21/09 - POE Dallas Fort-Worth - 398 days to gain permanent residence (CR-1)

02/22/11 - Sent I-765 to Vermont Service Center

Actually, I'm not from the UK, but Arizona... I can still give a visitor's perspective of Houston?

BIG. Everything seems to be on a larger scale there (or at least when I visited in 2003). More big SUVs on the road than I was used to, the malls were bigger, even the huge structures for the traffic lights were big!

And that's just compared to Phoenix...

I think that UKers will notice how wide the streets are. "Out west" a lot of our cities grew after cars were around, so we have nice wide roads, and lots of parking! Things are more spread out.

K-1:

January 28, 2009: NOA1

June 4, 2009: Interview - APPROVED!!!

October 11, 2009: Wedding

AOS:

December 23, 2009: NOA1!

January 22, 2010: Bogus RFE corrected through congressional inquiry "EAD waiting on biometrics only" Read about it here.

March 15, 2010: AOS interview - RFE for I-693 vaccination supplement - CS signed part 6!

March 27, 2010: Green Card recieved

ROC:

March 1, 2012: Mailed ROC package

March 7, 2012: Tracking says "notice left"...after a phone call to post office.

More detailed time line in profile.

LOL, american roads are big full stop. Just my little outback county road is as wide as what we call an A-road in England, which is a major trunk road. It fits 2 SUVs passing side-by-side with ease and this is a road that leads on to a gravel road essentially. the normal highway is as twice as wide as we're used to, so Houston roads are what 4x the norm LOL.
