In South Carolina, you are required to have a social security number to get a marriage license, so get it right away - first thing. Should take about an hour at social security office, make an appointment if possible. It took about 8 days to receive the SS Card, and then Marriage License was 10 minutes and the fee.

Best Wishes for a happy life together.

Better get one before marriage...as what they said, might the court needs SSN in getting marriage license..anyway, it's just easy to change name after marriage...

We waited the recommended 2 weeks or so before going to apply for his SS#. The marriage license application in our state asks for the SS#, but they do NOT require one. She told us if he didn't have one, no big deal, leave the space blank.

We had no problem at all getting it. We went in and spent about 30 minutes in the SS Office, she pulled up his name in her computer, that and some easy form and we were out of there. He got his card about 2 or 3 weeks later. He needed it to get a driver's license or State ID card. But we got married before it came in the mail.

Without a work permit, the only use for it was for the ID Card, AND I'm glad we have it now that he has the Work permit... and in time for filing 2008 tax returns. They also usually want a SS# for health insurance applications.

I can't imagine why anyone would wait to apply for it???

The main thing is her name has to appear in the database, so that's why they say give it two weeks before going, so her name from arriving is entered. Also at our Social Security Office they said the card had to be issued exactly like in the arrivals database, so a name change at the same time could muck up the system. I think maybe that's why it's easier just to get the card and number in maiden name. The name can be changed later, but the number will remain the same for bank accounts, filing taxes, etc.

Some smaller offices are unfamiliar with the rules that a K1 is allowed a SSN immediately. You can print this document....well it's long so print the applicable parts. https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/links/0100203500

The first part of Part B

B. Policy - Evidence of Employment Authorization

Required evidence for employment authorization is either a Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record, showing a class of admission that indicates the person can work without specific DHS authorization (RM 00203.500C.1.) or an employment authorization document (EAD) (Form I-766 or I-688B).

DO NOT process an application for an SSN card for an alien for work purposes unless the alien is authorized to work and shows the appropriate immigration document authorizing work. See RM 00203.510 and RM 00203.560 for processing SS-5s to issue SSN cards for nonwork purposes.

Then scroll down to Part C

C. Policy - Employment Authorization by Class of Admission

The following policy applies to employment authorization by class of admission:

1. Aliens Work Authorized Without Specific DHS Authorization

The following sections list nonimmigrants, by alien class of admission codes, who are authorized to work in the U.S. without specific authorization from DHS. The person’s I-94 will not have the DHS employment authorization stamp and the alien will generally not have an EAD.

Then you will see a chart showing the K1 is eligible.

That allows you to get a number. It doesn't allow you to work until you get EAD. Kinda confusing.

Whoever told you that didn't know what they were talking about.

RM 00203.210 C. Procedure - Immigration Document as Evidence of Legal Name

When an alien applies for an SSN card, SSA presumes the name on the immigration document is the legal name unless the applicant presents evidence of a legal name change (e.g., marriage) that occurred after the immigration document was issued.

RM 00203.210 Changing Numident Name Data:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203210

RM 00203.735 E1 (e) PROCEDURE—ONLINE SAVE QUERY RESPONSE INFORMATION DOES NOT AGREE WITH IMMIGRATION DOCUMENT

http://web.archive.org/web/20051002025945/.../lnx/0100203735

e. Applicant Has Changed His/Her Name But SAVE Query Response Shows Old Name

In some cases, the applicant may have changed his/her name after DHS issued the immigration document (e.g., he/she has married and is now using the spouse’s last name) but does not present an immigration document showing the new name. In these cases, the DHS system reflects the new name only when the person provided the name change information to DHS and requested to have his/her immigration record changed to show the new name. When the SAVE query response shows the old name that is shown on the immigration document presented and not the new name on the identity document presented, do not consider this a name discrepancy for enumeration purposes.
