Why would a chimpanzee attack a human?

I don't think anyone here is making light of the womans injuries. What is being questioned is why people have dangerous wild animals for pets. People have had their pet domestic dog attack them, wouldn't common sense suggest that perhaps a wild animal could do the same?

Exactly.I think it's really sad that the lady sustained those horrible injuries. But why do people set themselves up for situations like that by having wild animals as pets ?

You got me. I have no idea. Why would anyone think it was safe to have a tiger as a pet, and especially that idiot a few years ago that had a 350 tiger living in his 7th floor apartment. Naturally the tiger paid for his owners stupidity and was shot by police.

What do these idiots expect? Oh, I can't believe my pet lion ate my two children.

Probably already brought up... but definitely true. Did your pet dingoe also eat your other babie?

I'm still in disbelief of a chimp's strength. I'd love to see a pro-wrestler go against a full size chimpanzee (minus the sharp teeth).

If it was a gorilla, my money would be on the gorilla.

Mine too....those beasts weigh several hundred pounds. But from what I've read, a 90 lb. chimp can hold off 2 men easily. Their arm strength is incredible.

Chimps schimps... smaller rhesus monkeys are pretty tough sobs too. I can tell you from personal experience.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Except the dingo probably actually DID eat her baby. :)

 In India (where they are native), Delhi actually tried to ship some of its Rhesus Monkeys to forested areas of M.P.--until M.P. put the kibosh on it, telling them "don't ship your problem here, we have enough of our own". A (non)solution that they came up with later was to use Grey Langurs (larger, stronger species with a hard-ended tail) to scare off the Rhesus (edit: akin to using rats to get rid of mouse infestation).

(India is one of the few known countries where monkeys can roam at-will in 10-million-plus cities, such as Delhi and Bengaluru; I've actually seen monkeys climbing on buildings near Brigade Road--no exact US equivalent of this bazaar area, so imagine monkeys climbing around Times Square on New Year's Eve for even remote similarity).

For the record I think non-human primates are not too bad. The chimp in this story attacked likely thanks to bad pharmacology, not something of his wild nature. Macaques (rhesus) are just fairly moody- specially if abused, caged, or otherwise mistreated. In the wild I've come across one or two and pretty much have stayed away for safety. In labs I've avoided them pretty much since they are known to fling poo at lab people due to their caging conditions.

But a few times that I've helped friends handle them live and without sedation... wow... those are strong little f*ckers.

Oh and they love orange Fanta.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

FYI, langurs aren't much more gentle (to humans, or other animals) than macaques--even great-Dane-sized stray dogs will actually retreat from these up-to-Alsatian-sized*** primates.

***My own guesstimate for a specimen I saw on a shop roof in Ambur; "Alsatian" is Brit/Aussie/desi English for the Americanese "German Shepherd".
