Awww man,

That means the Book of the Jungle wasn't based on a true story?

Where is my corner? ah! I'm going to curl up in there for a moment

The truth is, Tarzan was a stock broker on Wall Street...and he took the elevator...not even the stairs.

Edgar Rice Burroughs?

I understand that it is easy to poke fun at what seems like a bizarre situation - But reading this thread has me appalled -

I live in this area - and know both the women involved. Yes, it was bizarre that she had the chimp living in her house, I don't agree with having wild animals as pets. But regardless of those issues, what has happened here is a horrific tragedy. The owner of the chimp lost her child in a car accident - This chimp became like a child to her, and she has had him for 15 years. So imagine stabbing your own child with a butcher knife, and calling the police telling them to come kill it -

The woman who was injured has already undergone countless surgeries, will suffer through many more, more than likely lose the use of one arm if not both, and probably never see again.

I understand it is easy to make light in some situations - But this is not one to joke about.

O/T has anyone seen any of the Johnny Weismuller Tarzan flicks recently - Tarzan the Ape Man was on AMC the other week, and its surprising how violent it is.

Johnny Weismuller and my dad both played football for the Johnstown Pa High School. They were both second string. The girls in Johnstown are bigger, tougher, and have better moustaches. Hungarians... mmmmmm

When one is close to the situation as you say you are, it's a bit differnt than everyone else...

If we used your standard for , when to laugh, at something, we would have little to laugh at.

I'm sure everyone is sickened to imagine such a thing happeneing but out of the presence of the principle players.. we can see humor as well.

To use your logic Danno - I'm sure we could find humour in every situation: from the Holocaust to 9/11.

Some things are just in very poor taste. Laughing at other people's pain is pretty low in my view.

Thank you for getting it -

We were in LI the other day and overheard some people in a store there talking about the the chimp incident, and one said that when she heard the 911 call that she thought it was the funniest thing she'd ever heard - with the chimp going crazy. They also alluded to sexual goings on between the owner and the chimp as apparently they slept in the same bed and that "I'm sure they've already done that!"

This other woman said when anybody falls down, she always laughs and thinks it's really funny. (She did add that she thought it was funny when she falls....) Long island ppl are...... very unusual people.

I wonder if that sort of attitude goes some way to explaining the Walmart worker who got trampled to death at the LI Walmart last year.

Paul, I have heard similar -

Believe me, when I met this woman, I thought she was nuts - especially when I heard that it slept in their bed. But she doted on that like a baby - cooked for it, they took it everywhere - You would see her husband riding around town with it on the back of a motorcycle. I had met the chimp, he was very loveable and affectionate, highly intelligent - I still didn't think she should have it in her home.

That being said, all judgment aside - What has happened is a horrific tragedy for both women. A little empathy goes a long way -

Instead of a, "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!" Tarzan would be singing soprano.
Well in those movies Tarzan goes Mano-a-Mano with silverback gorillas!

... a double-hard #######.

Well, considering that Burrougs never travelled outside the US, and given that his first novel (A Princess Of Mars) had to be entirely from imagination (NASA didn't exist yet), ... Edited by CherryXS

Tarzan was really gay.

Definitely metrosexual...not sure whether he swung both ways though.

The real lesson is that if you own a chimp, buy a gun. So when it starts eating your friends face..... shoot the friend then the chimp. Can you imagine continuing life with no face, eyes and hands?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I'm wondering what is the purpose of a Chimp to go after the face? Is that how they kill their rivals in the wild? Are their jaws stronger than a dog's? I'm just wondering if someone managed to punch a chimp in the face if it would retreat? They've got to have some weak points? Maybe we need to ask Tarzan?

John Carter doesn't fly a spaceship to Mars in that book.
True, but Burroughs was basically constructing Mars from noninfo.

(note: Carter actually leaves his body on earth and sends his soul to Mars, though Burroughs didn't explain it that way--source, footnote narrative in Lin Carter's Under The Green Star).
