My husband (yay!) flew back to the States with me on January 9, and on January 23 we went to apply for his Social Security Card. We were told it could take up to four weeks. We called today and were told that they were still waiting for confirmation from the Department of Homeland Security, and that could take months. Gah! He was already in the system when we got there, so it wasn't that his paperwork hadn't been processed from POE. Has anyone had a similar situation? Is there any way to help this along?

I forgot how frustrating it is to deal with this visa stuff...

Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm the sample! Me and my hubby went to the SSN office to apply one on Dec 16th. Two weeks later we got nothing so I called the hotline, first agent sound ok and told me that my ssn was returned (cuz of the post office!!). She said she have just put on request to re-send it to me but never came. Two more weeks waiting I called again but this time they weren't even bother to ask any of my info to check up for me and just said two weeks is for local born only and my case is probably in Homeland Security for name check and they wouldn't listen to whatever I was told it was returned! Finally we went to the SSN office again this time the agent was very helpful and told us no one put any request for re-send and he put this request for us and I got my ssn card in a week!!

Conclusion:

1. Check with your post office to make sure your husband's name is on your apt. so they won't return his mail.

2. Go to the SSN office with the receipt and check the status with them. Hotline agent can't help you at all!!!!!

Hopefully your husband can get his card soon! :star:

Cheers,

Glo

The clerk that I had here at the SSA told me that the DHS verification for people that weren't in the system yet is taking about 6 to 8 weeks. After that you get a letter stating that verification was successful and to expect your card in another two weeks. Her timeline proved completely accurate in my case. I got the letter 7 weeks after I applied for the SSN and the card two weeks after that.

You've got another two to four weeks to go before it's time to get worried.
