HI all,

starting a strange topic here..... hope to get some solid responses. My husband is from India and recently he is questioning about risks of staying here as US is falling in its economy. While he founf seberal reports where major corporations are outsourcing jobs. As all may be knowing companies who are not taking the stimulus are free to outsource jobs. He is specialised in technical area in movie postproduction.

These are the reports he found :

1)Hollywood Outsourcing Higher-End Legal Work to India http://abajournal.com/news/hollywood_outso..._work_to_india/

2) Special effects of outsourcing: Hollywood heads to India http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/busi...icle3879714.ece

3) Warner Bros. outsourcing jobs to India and Poland http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainm...r-bros-for.html

4)Hollywood now outsources to India for visual effects http://www.indiaenews.com/business/20080402/108255.htm

5)India Winning Higher-Status Jobs from US http://www.globalpolicy.org/globaliz/speci...3/0618india.htm

6)Oz bank to outsource 400 new jobs to India by year-end

http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/busine...d_10069485.html

7) Hollywood forays into India

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/South_Asia/FB10Df04.html

But then again for entry level jobs here in usa he has to train himself quite a bit before he gets a any job. Whereas Indian market is booming in jobs and many new companies are opening there rather than closing. Plus living is also quite cheap. So from all these things i see its best to live & work there than here.... what do VJers say , is it safe to get trained here ( to invest in classes) in usa and look for job. Is it a potential risk ??

Business wise, there would be a lot of outsourcing jobs in other countries, i.e. india.

If your husband work specialization is in outsourcing, he would find a better job in india than in the US.

This is my opinion, the only question i would ask your husband... Does he wants to transfer to US to be with you. A simple "yes" or "no" answer would do. If he is not willing to transfer, then are you willing to go back to india?

Anywhere you go, there is a crisis. This crisis is not limited in the US.

I have a friend who is a director in an outsourcing firm in the philippines. The last time i talked with him, he is here in the US studying and taking chances to find job here.

You just need a serious talk with your husband.

No he is not in outsourcing ...but all his friends are working great there with no fear of loosing jobs or no fear of how to pay bills. Plus as i said newer jobs are opening there. Plus i dnt understand why wd a director loose his job ? He is already here and we are to file for AOS. I already asked him that and he is here only for me ...he doesnt like the atmosphere, the unfriendlyness here..... he was a technical manager and lost the job to come to me. As you said about crisis....as far as i know in his country they dnt have any crisis at least in job and economy. The job & stock market is booming. I dnt know what to say him with all these reports coming on, I cant even assure him that he will get a job ..... i can may be go to india ...but i being almost 22 yrs elder than him there is also problenm of acceptance in society & perents.... dnt know.... love to get some more answers.... I don't want to be the bad person out here, but you might want to brush up with Indian news a little bit. Nearly 200,000 people lost their job witin past 3 months in India.

Most of the Indian IT sector is based on foreign income, so its natural when US/European companies go down, Indian companies go down too.

i could feel the sentiment of your husband but on the other hand if he really wants to be with you here then he will be willing to take the risk. i went to the point when i regretted coming here because i had a good job in the Phils. and i had already established my work experience there then here I am back to zero again and the worst part is that it's very hard to find a job that is similar to what i have been doing back home and the news of the layoffs and sinking economy is totally depressing. anyway i took a retail job just to get a local experience and on my first day after i got off from work, i cried so hard because i felt like i did not even have any other option but to take that job because the other companies that i applied did not even respond to my application. i did not even want to go to work the next day but i told myself that i'll give it another day. i'm on my 4th day now and i'm starting to like it. it's a very hard job for a small amount of money but at least i get to learn new skills and practice my english. i still continue to look for other jobs and next week i have an interview for an office job. i will also take tax classes this summer. even if it's so hard i just do the best i can and i think i have to look forward rather than always thinking of my life back home because if i do that i will never appreciate what i have here. tell your husband to just take whatever job he can right now so he will have a local experience. doing something different from his previous job would give him new skills as well. tell him to move forward and let go of his life in india. he should stop thinking what is best for himself but rather think what is best for both of you. you are considered as one now so in every decision that you make be sure that it will benefit both of you.

Thnaks Pinoy for th edetailed reply. Thanks Trinket ... when i asked him about the lay off in india , he says he knows but he is not in IT sector. He is in movie post production & corporate liaisoning. And he has a good amount of experience in India in that. Problem is due to his bringing up standard & earlier work standard he is not at all ready to take up anything that comes in his way. For him as he says it doesnt just work that way. We hd a detailed talk on this and he has invested a good 2 yrs in post production to train himself through courses and not ready to put that into hole. Here all the base level jobs in that field is being freshly outsourced to Thailand, Singapore, India & Poland. So IT industry may be cutting job in INdia but their own domestic industries & jobs from hollywood is increasing rapidly. I knw that for very certain he is here only because of me ... but then I cannot see him unhappy. May be he wd take something low only for us but then at heart he will always be unhappy. His pros: Me whereas cons list are far exceeding the pros : Unfriendly atmosphere, neighbors dnt interact, unsafe, no one walks on roads, lac of independence, cant go anywhere anytime, cant drink too much as because have to drive (although he doesnt drive ), living cost, no life insurance, uncertainty etc etc. I am really unsure what to do.

If his list of cons is so long, think not twice, but a hundred times about having him come here. Some people just can't adapt to another culture (not intended as criticism, just a statement.. we're all different), and having them move elsewhere can be destructive to them, and possibly to your marriage.

That's what I was thinking.

The German economy went through a kind of short lived boom (for them) last year, but it all fell apart and they are no better off any more. The world is too interconnected. When one thing goes down, it the rest are dragged with it, even if it takes awhile for others to realize they are being pulled down the drain.

Jobs are starting to slowly trickle back from India. Dell is moving its call center slowly back to the US. United also is bringing back its call center.

India is cheap labor, but not quality labor. They view task lists, instead of problem resolutions. They read off of a paper, they try to be polite, but this just ticks off a US caller that is getting no where, with no possible intervention, except the next Indian to answer the phone with an even stronger accent.

The maintenance cost of employees in India is quite high also. To encourage people to work the midnight shift (while its day time in the US), they are offered driver service to pick them up & take them home (since public transportation isnt readily available during night hrs), they provide them ALL meals. They have office parties like once a week to celebrate b-days, all the religious holidays. Its a lot more "off time" than here in the US. When you calculate all these costs, they arent incredibly cheaper.

By comparison, in the US a company paid a entry level accountant $40K (with 60hr weeks to show himself as a good worker) comes out to $12.82 an hour. When that position went to India it was paid $6K, but overtime is paid, and the company picks up all the costs of drivers, free meals, even maids to come clean their flats. All in all there is a savings, but not incredibly cheap as people may think.

Most of the outsourcing that is holding up India is from the US. Since we are in a crazy downturn, I think this is the perfect time to bring every one of those jobs back home. We need it.

A woman is like a tea bag: she does not know how strong she is until she is in hot water.

I am not sure if I can help but maybe help you in the insight specifically in the production industry. I work for a production company in Canada and would love to continue what I do when I move to US. We do special events but we also deal with some film and commercials. We provide Audio and Video equipment to these events and film productions so I do hear quite a bit about the background. Our company hasnt affected the economy as we do mainly Events and there is no slowing down there but the opposite actually. I also did recruitment for technicians. Based on what I know in the Northwest, everywhere is slow. there are many Production Technicians looking for a job. Many of the technicians I know have flew to California to look for jobs (as its the film capital). If your husband has production experience, he may not be able to find a job related to the career he is in already. Also speaking really good English would help him with obtaining a job. When I look for technicians, I look for their experience (2 years vs 10 years). If they have been in the industry for a long time, the higher chance he will get a job. Keep in mind the different programs, equipment, softwares, etc that India uses compared to US production industries. Maybe keep him aware of this. It helps to do your homework when he looks for a job. Since he has a background in post production, he can seek for jobs not just specifically in post production, but consider other types of company that is similar to it (ie. Studios, Audio Visual companies, design companies, etc) Since your husband is "mechanically inclined" he is versatile. If worse comes to worse, he could always get a job freelancing. It may not be what he wants but he can always learn something new by using his background to gain other experience. good luck
