There is a long thread in the stickies of the UK regional forum about bringing pets to the USA with good information. Look up each airline's policy. Continental allows pets in the cabin. Some require being in cargo, but they put them in the air conditioned/heated area. Most don't allow you to tranquilize them. Check out the UK regional stickie post. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showforum=99 and also this recent post http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=180272

Timeline

I've flown with an animal in the cargo area and also traveled 2500+ miles with two cats in my car. The cargo thing -- I was constantly worried and would never do it again. It is also expensive, between health certificates required and the fees. Oh, and there are restrictions on outside temperatures (too hot or too cold and they won't let you) for cargo animals. If you can take them in the cabin, that'd help, but note they will count as your carry-on, so one per person, and most airlines require a special reservation if they allow it at all.

In the car-- well, one of my cats basically sat under my seat for 4 days, but he was OK and pretty happy when he was in a strange motel. The other coped by crying most of the first day and riding on my shoulders to see out the window. If it's hot, you can't leave the car off for more than a few minutes (to pump gas or something), so it has it's troubles. But at least I knew they were safe, which I didn't with the airline cargo space and their crate possibly getting put onto the wrong plane.
