Im just so frustrated with my ssn. I applied for ssn January 22, 2009. I think I applied too early because they said they need to verify my status with DHS before issuing me a number. Its February 19, 2009 and no SSN in the mail. Tried to follow up by calling SSA and the local office... busy. Always busy. My husband works full time and goes to school. I just want my ssn so I could get a driver's license and open an account. I can't go anywhere and this is Florida. You need a car and its pointless to take the bus. Anyone with the same frustration?

unless Florida rules are drastically different from many other states... you will not be getting a DL until later (EAD or GC)

http://www.flhsmv.gov/ddl/faqkeys.html

Yes many states require more than just a SSN, they require evidence of legal presence longer than 90 days, evidence like (EAD or Green-card).

This can go in "Working-travel" prior to green-card. That forum deals with SSN, EAD, AP, etc..

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

The SSA office here also had to verify my status with DHS. The clerk told me to expect a letter from the SSA in six to eight weeks to tell me that I was verified correctly. She said to expect the SSN to arrive two weeks after that. I got my letter 7 weeks after I applied and the card a week and a half after that.

You probably have to wait a few more weeks.

We applied for the SS# in west palm. We waited 3 full weeks, and when the guy was doing his computer check or whatever he does, he made a comment like, 'good thing you waited this long.' I didn't dare ask what he meant, but we got the SS# in 5 days. Anyway, we then tried to go get a driver's permit, and the lady said, 'no can't do.' As we had nothing to do, we drove to 2 other offices and we got told the same thing. Shocking. Back in the good old south florida days, the clerks at the driving license place didn't know much and you could get away with a few things. Then again, the Florida DMV passed quite a few laws in oct 2008, so they could have gotten a lot stricter.

Good luck to you!

I just answered the same question in another thread

My husband (yay!) flew back to the States with me on January 9, and on January 23 we went to apply for his Social Security Card. We were told it could take up to four weeks. We called today and were told that they were still waiting for confirmation from the Department of Homeland Security, and that could take months. Gah! He was already in the system when we got there, so it wasn't that his paperwork hadn't been processed from POE. Has anyone had a similar situation? Is there any way to help this along?

I forgot how frustrating it is to deal with this visa stuff...

Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm the sample! Me and my hubby went to the SSN office to apply one on Dec 16th. Two weeks later we got nothing so I called the hotline, first agent sound ok and told me that my ssn was returned (cuz of the post office!!). She said she have just put on request to re-send it to me but never came. Two more weeks waiting I called again but this time they weren't even bother to ask any of my info to check up for me and just said two weeks is for local born only and my case is probably in Homeland Security for name check and they wouldn't listen to whatever I was told it was returned! Finally we went to the SSN office again this time the agent was very helpful and told us no one put any request for re-send and he put this request for us and I got my ssn card in a week!!

Conclusion:

1. Check with your post office to make sure your husband's name is on your apt. so they won't return his mail.

2. Go to the SSN office with the receipt and check the status with them. Hotline agent can't help you at all!!!!!

Hopefully your husband can get his card soon! :star:

Cheers,

Glo

Hope it helps!

Hmmm. We went to the DMV here and the person said, oh you need a social security. But then again, maybe they dont know what they are doing. I think next time I go to DMV and show them my social security, they will say I forgot to tell you that I need your GC or EAD too. Aaaaargh! My husband asked his bank if he can open a joint account for us and the bank said...oh no problem at all. We just need photocopy of her passport and visa and that's it. And when we went there, she was like "what is your ssn?". So we explained to her that I just arrived and she goes Im sorry I didnt know that you dont have ssn. OOOOOKKKKK!!! Then I need ssn so my husband can add me to his insurance. It feels like I need ssn for everything. Oh and I went to get a state id and the guy said I need ssn.

More patience it will come...Mine takes more than a month before I received it by mail...

Here in IL, what they need to apply for DL is a valid ID, your passport and the I-94...try to check in the office near you...

FILING FOR LIFTING OF CONDITION

Filed: AOS (apr) Country: Philippines

I filed for my SS Number on the 3rd week of September, 2008 using my maiden name. I waited two weeks but I did not receive any SS Card...so I continued waiting. I tried to reach the number of SS Office but I couldn't get it through. I went back to the Security office on November 17, 2008 after our wedding not to follow up for my social security card but to file for change of my name on my SS # because I am using the family name of my hubby. I tried to ask the personnel of that office why I did not receive my card yet...the reason " they have not sort the cards yet". My goodnesss!!! My application to change my name was not approved on that date because I did not have my EAD yet. So, I was just issued a print out in a sheet of paper with my maiden name and my SS number there. On Feb 4, 2009, I got my EAD card and I went immediately to the social security office to file for change of name of my SS #. Simultaneouly, on that same date, I filed for my driver's license in the Department of Drivers Services..I got a driver's license card on that same date but it was still on its pending status because when they verified my SS#, my married name did not match to the SS# on the SSA database. I tried to reach the Social Security office but nobody attended my call. So I waited for around 5 days, I went back to Social security office to verify if my name was changed in their database so i could change the pending status of my driver's license. The personnel told me it took 24 hrs after filing before they can change the entry in their database. It was only last February 13 when I received finally my Social Security card...Just imagine the period it took from the date of filing till I got my SS card.. It entails HUGE PATIENCE!!!!

Its better that you directly visit your SS office and inquire for your card. Bring your receipt, the white bond paper that contains the SS personel signature. Dont bother calling them.
