i have seen alot of interesting topics on here since i started looking around and i have received some interesting questions via PM, so i am posting different senarios to get ideas about others' experiences...playing a little devil's advocate! I have a pretty basic case myself, one arrest that was never tried or convicted when i was a teenager...so i am trying to get some insite into what other people have experienced! i have a friend and a relative who are about to embark on the same journey i have, so i might be doing a little snooping on their behalf as well  Their cases are a little more complicated!

I find there are two strands of people on here: one who recommend the truth only when you can't get away with a lie, and the other who gives their vote to 100% truth....

What % of people consulted lawyers in filing their application? Was it helpful?

I recommend the truth, but in order to get a "percentage" you may want to consider making a poll.

It is rare to see someone here recommend not telling the truth, at least with the USCIS. Lies can cause a ban

Based on recent threads (disappeared) about murder acquittal and dealing drugs, I'm getting the impression the moderators have deemed this OP a "troll" account?

Or maybe the OP is just a bit uncomfortable here.

Anyway, you probably won't find that many people here who have used a lawyer, because most here are doing it themselves.

As for lying vs telling the truth, well really that is your call. No one here should be telling you to lie and if they do I assume they will help you in some way if you are found out and get a ban? Or not.

See that is the thing, the ultimate decision about whether you lie or tell the truth in this situation is up to you, you are the one that will live with the consequences of your decision. It's easy for someone else to tell you to lie - they aren't going to be banned. While you sit in Canada waiting out a ban, they will be in the U.S. with their Husband or Wife.

If you have a good and I mean GOOD immigration lawyer I am sure it can help you to understand the legal implications of drug use and a criminal record, with regard to immigrating to the U.S. and how to overcome this.

I say always tell the truth, usually lying is worse than telling the truth.

I "consulted" 2 attorneys before beginning this journey. I hired neither, simply because in "consulting them" I discovered there is realy nothing they could do, but they chose to lie about it instead of tell the truth...ya see? I discovered that for thousands of dollars, the ONLY thing they can really do is complete an online form. I would still have to do all the rest myself. Hmmm. They tried to imply they could get it done faster, but when questioned they used the comparison of their cases to the USCIS timelines which we all know to be BS. Nearly everyone has a better timeline than the WORST case in the system, which is what is quoted. When pressured for a direct answer they admitted there was nothing they could do. When pressured further it became clear they would ADD several weeks to my timeline by not giving it the attention I could myself. Then BOTH of the attorneys didn't suggest, but stated directly the USCIS treats these cases as frauds and was "very particular" and "any mistake could add years to your case".

See, I could deal with someone that said, "Look, pay me XXX and I will do this for you" It is called a service and is no different than the guy that plows my driveway. I don't like to shovel, and can't justify $1000 plus for a snowblower big enough to do my driveway when a guy will come with a truck for $25 each time I need it, usually 4-5 times a year. Cool. We are both happy with the arrangement. Now, if he says $3000 to plow your driveway, which takes about as long as the attorney will spend on my K-1, I will say "No, thanks, I will buy the snowblower and do it myself" All is fair, all is honest. But attorneys do not want to be fair and honest because they would have to do this for $100-200 tops! And they want to make a killing on someone and scare someone in love who just wants to get his fiancee here so they can begin a life together. They are the worst scavengers on earth.
