I guess I'll have to wait and see if I'll encounter any difficulties changing my name at home in Ontario with a certificate from Texas. So far, the only thing we've tried to do with it is add my name to my husband's bank account here in Oklahoma. The bank wouldn't allow me to be listed in my married name without my driver's license being changed first, so they listed me with my maiden name.

Holliday- FYI

We were married in North Carolina and I was able to change to my married name with no problems at all using the NC marriage cetificate. One hint - if you are planning on changing your passport you will need photo identification in your married name. So I changed my driver's licence first, then my health card and both of those were used as additional identification for my passport. Even though my old passport was in my married name from my first marriage they did not ask to see any marriage certificates or divorce certificates for that matter.

You should have no issues with your Texas marriage licence.

Sweet deal, thanks for the info! Now that I'm back in Ontario (boo! Being home after less than a week of marriage SUCKS!) I'll probably start changing things over next week.

Holliday it looks like we'll be going hand in hand through this thing. We're sending the I-130 on Monday, so I guess I better go join the February filers group I saw you in. BTW, how did it go at the hockey game? Was it as cool as it sounded like it would be? It does suck to be married and then apart again doesn't it? When my husband left the morning of the 16th, I found it much worse than all of the other mornings we've done that for the last year and a half. It was just different being married than when we weren't.

Nice! I'm glad to hear that! It's oddly comforting to have someone with similar circumstances to 'wait' with, if that makes any sense. The wedding at the game was fantastic! Everyone had a lot of fun, and everything worked out absolutely perfectly! The families got along great, and they were all really helpful to us. So much for Friday the 13th being a day of bad luck! :) The only somewhat negative thing was that while it was a very entertaining hockey game, my team lost, as I had predicted. And I lost my voice from cheering so much hehe. But it really was a perfect day. How did your wedding go?

I didn't change my name until after we already filed the petition... I changed it on my SIN and my DL.. a simple process.. for the SIN, I just had to mail in a form, I think and for the DL I went to the DMV...

and back then they were still doing the amendment thing to the passports if you wanted to changed your last name... now you havet o apply for a whole new passport..

as for the visa, I emailed Montreal an they said I would just have to tell them at the time of the interview and to bring along the marriage certificate as proof.. which is what I did and they filled out the forms there using my married name and I got my visa and green card in my married name...

Terrific! I'm so glad to hear it went so well. I said the same thing about Friday the 13th as ours was perfect also. The weather was perfect - beautiful, sunny, 43 degrees, no wind, no snow on the ground (this is more than perfect weather for February in Indiana  ). We only asked my parents, son and two close friends to attend and we traipsed to the botanical gardens for pics and then to a nice restaurant for lunch. A few friends came to my house later and a we partied until well after midnight. All in all, I could not have asked for a better day... except I started crying during our wedding vows. I hate it when I do that.

Here's to a quick process for both of us.
