‘Data’ on Recovery.gov is Completely Made Up

One of the stated missions of the Obama Administration’s new Recovery.gov website is to: “Provide data that will allow citizens to evaluate the Act’s progress and provide feedback.” Just how accurate is the ‘data’ on this taxpayer funded website?

We got a glimpse last week when Politico reported that the “Job Affect” numbers released by the White House simply did not add up. So the Obama Administration claimed that, as a state, California would get 396,000 new jobs under the economic stimulus bill. But when you added the totals up by Congressional District, the California was set to receive 421,900 new jobs.

The Obama Administration has since corrected these numbers so that the state and Congressional District totals match. You can go to Recovery.gov and move your cursor over a map of the United States to discover how many new jobs will supposedly be created in each state under the bill.

Politico’s Ben Smith called the data correction “a different kind of reminder of the roughness of these estimates.” Another way to put it, is that the Obama Administration is just making stuff up.

The administration can make up anything they want on that website. Don't be naive and believe everything it says out-of-hand!

Where are all the sheep now? And they can make up anything they want and put it on tv, or the radio, or newspapers, etc.

Recovery.gov

It's live.

The new stimulus spending website mandated by the recently-passed (and soon-to-be-signed) American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is now up and operational.

The site, while providing the broad outlines and text of the stimulus bill, is thin on details -- the diagram below is about as explicit as it gets. This is to be expected, as the money has yet to start flowing. However, when the checks start getting handed out like so many Krisp Kreme doughnuts on Sunday morning, we're expecting good, solid, and detailed data (as specified in the legislation).

* Tax Relief - includes $15 B for Infrastructure and Science, $61 B for Protecting the Vulnerable, $25 B for Education and Training and $22 B for Energy, so total funds are $126 B for Infrastructure and Science, $142 B for Protecting the Vulnerable, $78 B for Education and Training, and $65 B for Energy.

State and Local Fiscal Relief - Prevents state and local cuts to health and education programs and state and local tax increases.

 I didn't intend this to be a bashing thread. I was not/ am not a sheep, but the President has my support and respect. I think he has firmly taken the reigns and I like the fact that he is open minded and not afraid to make changes on the fly. One month in, there is no reason to oust him yet. I also like using the internet in a positive manner.

Of course, no gov. site can replace being here, with people who really know what's going on.

Well heritage foundation is quite far to the right when it comes to economics.

But, its hard to estimate how many jobs will be created or saved by the economic stimulus. The best we can make are really educated guesses and of course, some people will complain anyway.

I do have an issue with the OMB, and the rest of the Obama administration, always couching their job numbers as "saved or created". How can they possibly enumerate how many jobs were "saved"? It is like saying, "I saved hundreds of lives, by not going on a killing spree."

There are accepted models for determining how many jobs were created. So the numbers on that are usually a pretty good estimate. But there are no models for determining how many jobs might be saved. Are they still saved if the layoffs happen a year later than what might have originally happened?

But people and the media still want numbers anyway, even though its really just a guess.
