I went to the oath ceremony this morning in San Diego. I arrived at 7:30 and there was already a pretty big line, the doors were opening at 8am. There were about 500 people waiting for their citizenship ceremony accompanied with friends and family.

We checked in, they took our green card and gave us a little american flag and an American history book.

The applicants were separated from the friends and family. The officer started by giving the schedule There were some military members in the audience, so he started by recognizing them. Then, local dancers were call to make russian dances (yes, that was strange). This was a bit too long to my liking.. Then the federal judge appeared and started giving a speech and named all the 63 countries represented. We had to stand up when our country name was given, there was another French person that stood up with me. The most number of people that stood up at the same time were from Mexico, the Philippines, and Vietnam. There was a lot of cheering, it was great!

Then we all stood up and repeated the oath after the judge, then she said "Congratulations you are now American citizens" everybody cheered. The judge was very emotional and that was the part I liked most, of course.

A representative from the Daughters of the Revolution made a speech and that was followed by two guys and two girls singing four patriotic songs.

We then gave the pledge of allegiance to the flag (which I wish I learned before going, I didn't expect that and they didn't give us any paper with it so I had no idea of what to say).

Then we proceeded to get our certificate of citizenship, and exited the ballroom. Outside there were booths to register to vote, but no passport application booth, so I will get that done tomorrow.

I'm glad i'm done with the USCIS!

YAY  Congrats! I remember that day well. The officer who interviewed me gave me back my Lebanese passport and said I could keep it as a souvenir  He also gave me a pen with the American flag on it (not sure what I did with it since then lol). Now we hope my husband can get here and become a citizen in 5 years or so.

Thanks everyone :)

I applied for my passport today. I will wait until I get the passport back in about 3 weeks to do the SS change. At the ceremony the officer also talked about the DMV. I checked the DMV site and I don't really see anything having to do with naturalization, did I miss anything? Or does it have to do with the voting registration which I already did after the ceremony???

Now of course I can't prove my citizenship for the next two weeks... and I can't leave the country in case of emergency.. argh!

Yes, you have to update SSA and DMV record.

Because of Real-ID and enhanced security, when DMV renew the driver license, they verify your immigration status.

So when you receive new U.S. Passport, you can bring U.S. Passport with you, and show them for your status.

Then they will not ask for the proof again.
