I can't wait for my move to the states and not being able to work for a few months. I hope to really focus on getting fit. What else will I do with my time!!!!!

Yeah when I moved here, I immediately joined a gym and work out at least 5 days per week! I know once I start working, that will lessen but it's been a good and healthy time filler

Is cardio 20-30 min 3x's a week and strength training 40 min 2x's a week not enough to really change your body?

Yes, but you are not going to get into great shape on that training, it is more maintenance; you have seen moderate results in 16 weeks. I suggest bumping your cardio to 45mins 4X a week and stick with the weight training at least 2-3X week. 3X a week would of course be a better split if you can do that. And diet i a HUGE part of it all of course............

I started WeightWatchers online last week after being inspired by my mom who has lost 25lbs (and counting) in 3.5months. She's possibly going to be on a lung transplant list and needs to get to a certain BMI before they will do it (her meds caused a lot of weightgain).

So, after one week I am down 1.5lbs and hopefully even more when I do my monday weigh in :)

I agree with Todd&Dani - In order to see results, you need to kick is up a notch, especially on the cardio side of things. You should do a minimum of 30 minutes cardio and mix it up with weight training if you can for another 15-20 minutes at least 4 times, if not 5 times a week.

When I lost 12 pounds from Jan-March, I was working out 5x a week, always did at least 30 minutes cardio and then weights. Once a week I did a weight class. But, the biggest factor for me was the working out in conjunction with my diet. I was averaging about 1500 calories a day, and was really watching my protein vs. carb intake. I was maxing out my protein calories and really watching my carb intake and only eating whole wheat and carbs low in GI. It took me a couple of weeks, but once I got used it to I felt great! I also cut out most junk food, all soda/pop/juice - including diet and wow did I see a huge different in my bloatyness - The first pop I had in May made me SO bloated. I used the website sparkpeople.com to track my food intake and it was amazing. I think I'll start using it again.

Anyways, funny this was resurrected. I went off my workout diet in April, and have slowly gained back about 5 pounds, so I'm still down about 7 pounds, but I lost all the leanness I had gained from working out and my clothes were getting tight again. Yesterday I joined the gym here ($199/ 6 months, not bad for NYC) and plan to go pretty much every day to kill time and get back into shape! Today I did 40 minutes of cardio and weights and sit ups. I feel better already. Tonight the hubs wants to go too, so I'll go again and do some more cardio. I think a big part of my working out will be to help my hubs get back into shape too. I think it will be a good thing for us to do together and start eating healthy together.

I won't get into too much detail but i wanted to outline my battle with weight over the years.

I was 180 in highschool and a track member. I played Rugby and ran daily. Afterwards I got a desk job and ate double cheeseburgers with bacon every day, and 6-12 cokes a day. I gained 180lb in a year. I doubled my weight.

It took 2 years before I did anything about it. After 2 years of working on Atkins, I lost 155lbs.

Then I got married. I went from 205 to 245 in a year. Since being married I have battled on and off with my weight.

Recently I committed to a lifestyle change before new years. I cut out red meat and pork completely. I am sticking to as much 'real' food as possible and I try to work out on a semi regular basis. I am down 20lb so far, and hoping to drop another 20 by August (when I visit my parents)

I weighed an okay weight.

There is something about my body I dont understand though.

3 months ago I moved into town to get out of my parents' house.

I walk about 25 minutes twice a day 4 times a week.

Yes, I ate my share of junk food, but not THAT much.

In those 3 months, I gained 10 lbs.

How am I gaining weight with like 8x the exercise I ever did back at home?

I hardly even eat junk food anymore now...

Anyone have any idea?

I don't want to go to my doctor about it unless I have to... she's not very helpful.

Did you clothes get tighter too? If not, might just be muscle build up.

A true person with good knowledge! :) This post caught my eye immediately...you seem to have a good comprehension of wellness....

I agree...my fiance and I train professionally...he is also the author of two health and wellness books he has written and published. It all depends on your goals... but the order of relevance and impact are as follows....

1-weight loss starts in the kitchen

2-it is further reinforced on the treadmill

3-weights is a buffer and the finishing touches...

30-40 mins of cardio session is just maintnce or for people with underlying health reasons....

True results are based on 45min to an hour of cardio 4-7 times a week. Depending on what your lifestyle and goals are... on off season...I train at 1 hour cardio sessions 6 days a week....getting into shape for an event I train 1-2 hours a day 6-7X a week....

Don't fool yourselves...a cardio session could be walking on the tread at a moderate speed for 1 hour....anything counts and is better than nothing...

Several small meals a day....5-7 times a day...

You can truly reform yourself in 6 weeks if you apply yourself.... don't always base it on the scale...muscle weighs more than fat.... you may not lose much weight, but your clothes can be falling off of you! :)

I commend anyone who makes the decision to get fit and sticks with it!!!! It's easy to do nothing about it...twice as hard to get moving!!!!

Good luck and congrats to everyone who is working hard towards their goals....feel free to PM me for any advice :)

ps. don't forget, once you start to see results....the motivation kicks into high gear and it becomes addictive!!!

Yeah... they got tighter at my gut, haha.

I can't even button up my size 12 capris anymore, and my work pants zipper doesn't stay up anymore.

My fiance thinks I'm holding in water, since I only go on my birth control's placebos every 3 months. (It got rid of my period, and periods every 3 months only last like a day and a half, might have something to do with it)

A lot of the initial weight loss in the first week or so is water, so I've heard. Might I go slightly off topic, and

ask what type of BC you're on? I'm on the patch, which is one per week for 3 weeks, then one week off. I'd love to go without a period.. lol that really opens a can of worms though, so yeah.. just curious what you're on.

I'm on Alesse.

There is actually a birth control that's designed to give you only like 4 periods a year, though. I think it starts with a G. I remember it's in the wiki article about birth control.

Mine's not really meant for it... but my doctor says it's normal. Who knows with her.

I have always been a slender girl, my waist no matter if I gain a few pounds always seems to stay around the same. All of my extra weight goes to my hips thighs and butt! I am a bit concerned because I have not tried on my wedding dress since I bought it and wondering if it still fits!! eeek!! It needed to be taken in in the hips and thighs, and the bust needed to be taken in a little bit as well, so I think have some cushion! Anyways, I was thinking of starting some cardio but also pilates or something to tone my thighs and butt. I usually look like a floundering fish on a treadmill, so I have no clue where to start! I hate having to GO to a gym! But then I get bored with fitness videos! I just lack motivation. I need Tommy from Bulging Brides! :P Too bad I don't live in Vancouver :(
