Hi.

My interview is scheduled for 2/19. I was going through the list of items we need to bring to the interview. One of which is a sworn affidavit from parents/family members testifying their knowledge of the marriage. Since neither me nor my husband are on very good terms with our families, we don't see obtaining the letter as a possibility. Is there a way around this??

Also, this is actually our second interview notice (we had a rescheduling). The battery of items we need to bring with us to the interview as stated by each notice is different. In particular, on the old one we have to bring our birth certificates. Is that really necessary?? Because I am not sure if it's worth the hassle to go retrieve these documents from my parents.

Thanks!!

Please reply if you can provide help~

Is this gonna be your first AOS interview? If it is, you don't need to have a statement about the knowledge of the marriage. I had my AOS interview already and we don't have those statement. I think it's not necessary.

It's important to bring your birth certificate to the interview (both in your original language and in English translation) because although you submitted your birth certificate when you applied for your AOS, there is a chance that the officer might misplaced or lost your birth certificate and/or other documents that you submitted previously. If the officer doesn't see the documents, such as birth certificate, etc, he/she will ask you to provide another copy during the interview.

Affidavits are very weak proof (my opinion) - you should have better proof like utility bills, bank statements, credit card statements, insurance etc. - in BOTH names - these prove that your lives are intermingled better than any letter from a friend or family member - however, if you do not have any such proof then you can ask friends to submit affidavits. I never submitted affidavits. Good Luck

Theese affidavits are an option not a requirement. I had only one on my interview and just because we lived with my hubby's parents at the time and didn't have lease. Birth certificate is an option too. What they really need is proof of your and your spouse's citizenship. Passport is good enough for that.

Thank you all for your reassuring responses.

This is our first AOS interview. Like I said previously, there are differences in what we need to bring to the interview btw the first and the second notices.

Can anyone who had their interview (my interview is in SF) recently give me a quick rundown of items I ABSOLUTELY need to have??? I want to make sure I triple check that I have those items. It would be terrible to have the application denied bc it was so much $$ and time investment.

Thank you!
