Giant swarm of bees reported in Santa Ana

SANTA ANA — A beekeeper has been called out to remove a giant ball of bees on a tree and sidewalk in a residential area.

Firefighters responded to the area of 1st and Jackson streets at 1:36 p.m. after they were called by Animal Control regarding an unruly swarm of bees, said Santa Ana Fire Capt. Chris Caswell.

Firefighters noticed bees on the sidewalk, some dead, and a massive ball of bees on a tree gathered around the queen, Caswell said.

The engine captain on scene determined the bees were passive and cordoned off the area to prevent then from being disturbed.

"We don't want anyone to get stung," Caswell said. "We just want to make sure no citizens walk in the path."

A beekeeper was called to move the glob of bees to a safe area, although there is no guarantee they will stay in their new location, Caswell said.

Bees tend to move when it rains or when the queen thinks they need to move based on changing conditions, Caswell said.

"If you are not around bees it's a little unnerving," Caswell said.
