I don't want to see gore, not for the sake of it anyway. I agree with PD on this, violence in films should advance the story in some way. Gratuitous violence for the 'thrill' factor is not entertainment.

As to the point of the military watching real life footage of war, it probably is some form of propaganda.

I share your view for watching movies for entertainment. I don't consider watching some guy die slowly of cancer entertainment.

I don't mind gore films like say George A. Romero's stuff - which despite the gore does actually have something going on under the hood as it were. I draw the line at things like Hostel, Saw and Turistas. Seeing someone dissected alive in the manner of a medical autopsy is sadistic voyeurism of the worst sort.

I'm teach the Holocaust and I've got a great deal of training and education on teaching it and though it's one of the more horrific times in human history I don't think we need movies like this. Tell the real stories. Tell fictional accounts based on truth.

Don't forget to add that Allies didn't go to war to stop the Holocaust and it wasn't a major issue until after the war. Not to excuse the Nazi slaughter but the mass murder of folks in other countries is largely overlooked and you'll have a hard time finding movies dealing with it. The Killing Fields and Hotel Rwanda are the exceptions.

I agree. Considering that we didn't help the Jews when we knew what was going on with the concentration and death camps and only went to war after Japan bombed us, definitely. The only people who really knew what was going, aside from a few in the Red Cross in the know, and those who fled Nazi-controlled Europe to tell the story, tried and failed to get the rest of the world to believe.

Even The Killing Fields and Hotel Rwanda came out years later. There have been a few documentaries about the problems in Darfur and the Congo, but I don't know that I ever saw any movies about Albania, about Serbia or Bosnia....How many movies have been made about Stalin's murder of his people?

But even so, to me, this film is just revenge and gratuitous violence. From what I read, obviously I haven't seen it yet.

Hollywood has always been biased towards our cultural world view.

Of course it has. Hollywood is stationed in the United States. It's only natural to think that movies created here would have a western viewpoint and to a larger extent, an American one.

The major viewing audience in the U.S. is that of Americans. I realize there are other viewers from other countries, but Hollywood primarily concerns itself with sales in the United States. Hollywood believes most Americans would rather see stories based in the U.S. or somehow revolving around it. Whether or not that's true depends on someone's preference, but it might explain why some movies were changed to suit an American audience.

Just wondering why you felt the need to elaborate on my point to state what was already implied.

Well... what is "our cultural view?" American ideals or overall Western society? The U.S. also has many different cultures within it. None of those always mesh.

Western society obviously.

No, it's not obvious. How the U.S. thinks and how other countries think (as a whole) can be and often is quite different. As I said, Hollywood is an American entity. It presents films that are biased in-favor of the U.S., whereas other nations are considered after that. That's why movies like U-571 was changed. It was assumed Americans wouldn't care about the British.

The difference most countries' movies don't get a wide release in other countries; thus, they don't have to tailor their movies to an international audience. A lot of American movies dazzle with FX, cartoons, violence and forgettable dialogue because it sells overseas.

The point I responded to was a general one about why certain stories don't get told by Hollywood.

The altering of historical fact for dramatic license and audience response is another issue altogether.

Maybe you haven't noticed, but Hollywood is now owned by the Japanese, so go watch that on your Sony TV set. They were an eastern culture, but studied our ways to become a western culture and got rich off of us. We are judged in the middle east by the movies they make so the middle east is getting pissed at us. This is how they plan on winning WW II and it's working.
