Valid for? What do you mean?

If renewing the passport it should be valid for at least 5 years.

The consulate only needs a passport that still has a validity of 6 months beyond the visa issuance date.

Most countries make their passports valid for 5 or 10 years.

My wife's Chinese passport was valid 5 years, my US passport is valid 10 years.

In Turkey, they have the options of 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 year. I guess what I am trying to figure out is how long will he actually NEED his passport after coming here.

Go for the 5 year passport, you may want to travel internationally, and renewal in the USA can be a pain. 5 years should be good until if or when becoming a US citizen through naturalization.
