Ok I am leaving finally tomorrow and I need some advice.

I will be bringing with me my jewellery, which i have had a while. that can count up to quite a bit but have no true clue what it cost. (old gifts)

My wedding ring worth £600 in its box (obviously not used yet) and a gift box of jewellery (though dont know exactly whats in there and its worth.) that i am not to open till the wedding in April.

I would feel a bit nervous about packing it into my luggage and into the hold and would feel better if it came with me in hand luggage.

but I want to know, what should i be declaring tomorrow on the form? do i declare everything i own as I wont be returning?

should i be declaring the wedding ring and gift? and will i have to pay duty on anything? This is my personnal possetions and jewellery that I am talking about.

the only thing I will be bring ing of value other than these and and a wad of money that is nowhere near $10,000 will be a duty free bottle of rum if its cheap enough.

Thanks, Hannah.

Your personal property is your personal property, it does not have to be declared as "imports". You did not go overseas, buy it, and return with it. The only thing you need to declare is tobacco, alcohol, large sums of cash or negotiable financial instruments (over $10,000 USD) and any plants, animals, etc. It will be on the declaration form. You, essentially, have no "foreign purchases" as you will not be "leaving anything" in the USA, ie. gifts.

Hannah gifts are fine. However you should open them before you go. One of the questions you are asked is did you pack your bag yourself. If you say yes and don't know the contents and the contents ends up being something that does need decaration, you could be in trouble for

a) lying as you don't know what it is and haven't packed it and

b ) if it does turn out to be something you do need to declare.

Just be careful hon.

Don't open the gift. If they should bother to look in your bags, they can open it and you hide your eyes. You packed yourself. No strangers gave you something to carry. It's fine. Declare alcohol bought at duty free. You don't pay duty on household goods/personal items.
