Hi Everyone,

Just a question to those who have similar experience, I came in here in the USA with K3 visa. My husband and me just submitted my AOS last Saturday. My question is, do you think I can get now SS number? Its quite difficult of not having one, since my husband cannot include me in his insurances, opened a bank account with our names on it or just other merely other office transactions in here that requires SSN. Do I need to wait for my AOS to be approved before I can get one?

Thank you for all the replies.

God bless.

Your timelines says you are a K-1 visa, anyways once you have an EAD card you can get a social security number which it says in your timeline you have already it will say however for work purposes only until AOS is approved, but you can use the number to file for married filing joint tax returns

also bank accounts usually require a US ID EAD card, and or secondary ID like foreign passport, and proof of adress a bill or mail in your name with current adress. Hopefully that helps

You need your AOS application or an EAD application APPROVED before you can get an SSN. I understand how you feel but even if you go to the SSA office right now, they won't be able to help you without a green card or an EAD. Most banks can use your passport information to get your name in your husband's bank account until you get an SSN. You will need to show bank statements on your AOS interview so make sure you get that done.

To be assigned an SSN you need to have a document in your possession that authorizes you to work, i.e. I-766 or I-551 stamp or card.

In the meantime, if you need a number to file taxes apply to the IRS for an ITIN. If IRS asks for proof that you are not eligible to be assigned an SSN ask for a SSA-L676 notice from SSA.

When am I legally required to provide my Social Security number:

I would double check about being added to his insurance if I were you. When Phil wanted to add me to his, the HR manager thought it was impossible because I didn't have an SSN. Phil insisted that the the HR person call a manager at the insurance company and it turned out that they could add me. It was just a situation the HR person had never dealt with before so they didn't know.

I was also added to my husband's bank accounts before I got my SSN. They just needed my passport number. Again the person at the bank branch didn't think he could add me but we made him check with the branch manager. In the end he even had to call the IT help line to figure out how to enter my information properly. We had joint checks and I had my own bank card before I got my SSN.

Sometimes you just have to be persistant. Often people just don't know what the process is when someone has no SSN.
