Auto Ins. Being Cancelled because hubby hasn't gotten his driver's license yet...

When we got married I called and told my insurance carrier that I was now married and asked them to add my husband to my home and auto ins. policies. They did and didn't increase my premiums. They asked if he had a drivers license and I said International only... they said fine and told me he would need to get it before my policy renewal in April.

Saturday I got a letter from them telling me that I will be cancelled because he doesn't have a US drivers license. I phoned them and suggested that they exclude him as a driver, and he just won't drive until he gets his license, but why cancel me???? They said they don't insure people who are married to people who don't have a valid license. WTH?????? I asked them if they would cancel me for marrying a blind man! Why cancel me because he doesn't drive??? This seems like a load of manure.... My Mom hasn't driven for 10 years and it hasn't affected my dad's insurance...

Has this happened to anyone else? He isn't driving as it is because we only have one vehicle... but that fact doesn't seem to matter to them...

LOL! That's the most ridiculous ####### I've ever heard. Who do they have running that company. Sounds like a skit from Saturday Night Live!

I'd pitch a big ole fit on them, and embarrass myself and everyone else within hearing distance.

You need to take it up with the company director, write a letter of complaint for the inconvenient blunder that was made and ask that you be compensated fairly for the misinformed retarded rep that happily cancelled you for yes marrying a man without a US drivers license. I would LOVE it if I was the one taking it up...I know I would win. Good luck

They told you he had to have his license by April. It doesn't look like to them that that is going to happen, so they are canceling you. I mean, did you ask what the consequence was if he didn't have it by the April renewal date?

Why doesn't he have a license? He can get one, but he doesn't have to use it if he doesn't want to. Seems to be far less hassle to me.

makes more sense to go ahead and get it, youhave been paying as if he had it, then IF he decided to drive your one and only car he would be covered, looks better than chancing the fact of the car is there and not having the license IF he decieded he wanted to drive. They are seeing that more as a probability

Did you mention who your insurance co. was?

One of my favorite/worst stories is of my father--after decades with GEICO, he got a letter in the mail telling him that they were dropping him. why? his car was too old. Wow, I guess no one told him that a retired tsgt with four kids/one in college could afford to buy a new car every year.

Screw GEICO. If you have good luck with them, good. But they lost any chance of my business a long time ago.

Anyone else have a horror story?

Personally, I think they saw something in your stats and they used this as an excuse.

Are you serious??? You think he is being stubborn about it or something??? Do you think being able to pass the driving exam is an automatic because you get a visa to the USA???

He doesn't have a license because he doesn't have a drivers manual he can study in his language! He speaks, reads, and writes English fairly well, but the vocabulary in the driving manual makes it difficult for him to memorize every point. They have the manual in about 6 other languages but not his... the test comes in 6 other languages, but not his. They do not allow translators. They MIGHT allow him to use a dictionary.

His country isn't famous for making people KNOW OR FOLLOW the rules of the road.. so while he is THE BEST defensive driver I've ever met... knowing AMERICAN rules of the road and such things as mandatory insurance limits and "Implied Consent" make little sense to him...

The issue is that it is ridiculous for them to CANCEL ME because he doesn't drive.

My stats are definately not the issue. My insurance carrier is Ameriprise's Auto Ins. (forget the exact name). I have 34 years of driving without a ticket. One accident 5 years ago. I've had them for 2 years... and the reason I stay with them is my premium for FULL COVERAGE with $250,000 Liability limit, is about $249 every 6 months.

If they do not "recant" I'm going to file a complaint with my the Insurance Commissioner. I already have one going because of a Health Ins. Company that sold us a policy (without asking his immigration status) and then put in their fine print that they specifically exclude people who haven't been living in the USA for 6 months. What a crock! They told me on the phone that they do this because if you haven't lived here for 6 months you haven't had the "benefit" of western medicine! Like you're going to have any western medicine during the 6 months WITHOUT insurance!!!! Benefit/Western Medicine... WHAT A CROCK! I know for a FACT I have never been asked for proof of residency when I filed a health ins. claim!

Anyway, I'm giving them until EOB today and then a call to my attorney... on both situations... I'm sick of these insurance companies who seem to have no concept of disparate treatment, or discrimination. If seriously doubt they would be cancelling me if he was blind, or had epilepsy.

Oh well... just one more set of issues to deal with!

I must have given the impression that he is refusing to get his license. Nothing could be further from the truth...

Maybe I should have indicated that he has been studying daily for months hoping to pass the test as soon as possible.. but it's not easy and he is one of those people who freeze in formal tests... We are doing sample tests on line to prepare him, and next week we'll give it a try for real, but if you fail 3 times you are barred from doing it again for like 2 months... so he wants to be sure he passes in the 3 tries... Also the test is done on computer which makes him even more apprehensive. My husband isn't a young buck... so this isn't anything he is even slightly comfortable with.....
