Quite honestly, it surprises me that people accept this line or reasoning at all. If people behave badly, the do so under their own recognisance and it's not because some 'devil' told them to, or possessed their body. I can see why, before we understood brain malfunction how this idea came about, but to believe it now? Seems pretty strange to me.

Being possessed doesn't mean a person loses total control of their body. Whether it really happens (I believe it can and does happen, though rare) is another thing.

What does demonic possession mean to you then? I am not saying that the belief is that there is a devil that replaces the human soul, but more that they both cohabit the body with the demon controlling some of the thought processes. However, to be honest, none of it makes any sense to me.

I can quite see though, that certain psychiatric disorders and other mental illnesses give the appearance that the person has lost control for periods of time, for example epileptic seizure.

Yes, I agree that it someone could mistakenly label someone possessed when they have something psychological and that could be dangerous. The Catholic Church, however, does take demonic possession seriously - they have designated clergy as exorcists in the event that someone would be found to be demonically possessed. They follow rigid guidelines to determine whether the person truly is possessed or not before administering an exorcism.

What I'm saying is that one can't simply say they are possessed or claim someone else is possessed for it to be true, even among those who believe it is possible.
