i think that those of us that do not feel comfortable with a gun should prolly not own one as many deaths in home invasions happen because the invader used the persons own weapon on them.

those of us that feel comfortable having a gun and understand that if u ever point one at someone u better have the ability to pull that trigger and not just use it as a possiable deterrent should own and keep a gun in the home

the first thing they taught us when we took the concealed weapons training ..........never ever point a gun at an invader unless ur prepared to pull the trigger and reap the consequence that could and prolly will come from killing someone

we have several hand guns and rifles in our home first because we are a family that hunts, second because of self protection........could i pull that trigger? i hope i never have to find out but feel comfortable and secure in the knowledge that if i ever have to find out its there.

So... you should buy a gun because you're already afraid of being duct taped to a chair, electrocuted with a lamp cord, being forced to watch your daughter and wife gang raped and throat slit, and then beaten senseless while they bleed out.

Priceless

i don't choose to live in a rough neighborhood where i expect to be victimised, and i don't often get on planes that are not in good condition. i'm not really afraid of the engines on a better quality plane i'm riding on cutting out, but a parachute is nice to have, anyway.

the reasons for owning guns are as varied as the people who own them. some like to be able to protect themselves and their families. some like to hunt. some like to collect. some like to target shoot. some like to shoot competitively. some just like to tinker with mechanical things. some like the idea of being able to stand ready in defense of their state against enemies, foreign and domestic.

Home invasion is rare.

The most common (violent) crime against the person is mugging, and I am more likely to be a victim of that than say... a woman is to be raped. For example.

At least you admit that and dispense with sensationalist propaganda.

robbery is a potentially violent act that may involve a weapon. there is an implied threat in confrontational robbery, weapon or not, and in most states a statutory right to use lethal force in defense of self or 3rd party against such an act that may involve "heinous crimes against the body". in pennsylvania i am specifically entitled to take such action under Sec 6100 of the UFA. i am also specifically entitled under Sec 6102 to carry a firearm concealed for the purpose of such action. sometimes, i do. i usually carry a 1911 type 45, butt forward behind right hip, tucked into the waistband of denims. in dress clothes i usually carry a remington 51 in 380, a very slim and light gun with enough punch to stop a fight.

interestingly enough, i may also carry a firearm openly for defense (or any other lawful purpose) in pennsylvania (with a few restrictions), as such is not prohibited by law. sometimes i do. i usually carry a SIG P226 9X19 in a godrich and gould duty holster that would have been considered fashionable in cop circles a few years ago. it is a "double retention" holster, so the gun cannot be removed by someone not familiar with the retention feature. the retention also keeps the gun from falling out of the holster and clattering across the road when i'm on the motorbike. i also have a beretta 92F in similar rig, and a third duty holster suitable for a 1911 type.

an armed person has a better chance of resisting violent assault of any type. an openly armed person inhibits criminal activity, in general. an openly armed person is also frequently offered free coffee and donuts, but i usually pay the bill.

Good for you.

I've never felt the need to arm myself.

Have you ever felt the need to defend yourself?

edit-I'm not being argumentative-it's a genuine question. :)

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

you're english. you never had the right until you came to America.

the day you got your green card, you became more than just an englishman.

you're not just a subject, anymore. you're and subject, and an LPR with some of the rights of a citizen.

As I said I never felt the need to arm myself. Moving here hasn't changed that.

exerpts:

"He was rattled. He was shaken when he was outside," said neighbor Katrina Jones, who lives off Birkdale Drive, near Wellington Trace and Forest Hill Boulevard. "He could have been dead. His wife was hysterical."

Miller, a music teacher at Howell L. Watkins Middle School in Palm Beach Gardens, went for one of his guns. He told his mother that the intruder fired a shot, then Miller fired. During the exchange, which shattered the rear door, Tomlin, armed with a .40-caliber handgun, was killed.

"He did have good instincts. That was a blessing," Harma Miller said. "I know he feels badly about it. But he didn't have any choice.

"It's really scary, and when we are thinking about it, it gets scarier. I could be picking up my children and taking them to my own funeral home," she said. "We've been blessed."

I feel badly for the intruder's family, but he is dead thanks to his own poor choices. The onus is on the intruder, and bravo to the schoolteacher for protecting the lives of his family....I'm sure it wasn't an easy position to be in.

In my mid 20s, I lived alone in a 3000sq ft house...my family had moved up to central florida, and I was essentially alone for the first time in my life. Newly separated, recovering from surgery (11 years today btw! Thank God!)...I did have a home alarm, but how on earth would I protect myself if someone broke in?

My dad, USMC btw, had previously taken me for gun classes. Taught me all about how to use them, etc. I do own a gun, then and now...and one night, when the alarm malfunctioned, I was terrified...of course I don't want to kill anyone, but if they're comin for me, then you can better believe I was prepared to defend myself. I laid in a closet with my gun, hoping that it didn't come to any fire fight, but I was prepared nonetheless.
