The reason this is news is because it's so uncommon.

A kid finding Dad's gun and accidentally shooting someone isn't big news cause it happens all the time.

But go ahead and use this as evidence owning a gun is a great idea.

yeah, kids shoot people all the time by accident, right.

denial is more than just a river in egypt.

owning a gun is more than just a great idea. it's a constitutional right, whether you like it or not.

if you don't feel you are responsible enough to own one, then buy a blanket to hide under. your choice.

He might be your hero Danno, but he's not mine. I have no idea if he had to take the course of action that he did, or not. One thing I do know, taking a life is not, nor should it not be something one does lightly or celebrates. I somewhat doubt the teacher is taking any satisfaction from what occurred although I am sure he is thankful that he lives to tell the tale.

surely you noticed these lines.....

Inside, Miller, who owns a .38-caliber pistol and a .22-caliber rifle, and his wife huddled in their bedroom as the intruder moved toward them in the dark.

Miller got out his pistol and held it at the ready.

Through the bedroom doorway, he saw the robber's silhouette moving toward him.

A gunfight ensued.

if they were in their bedroom, they had no other place to retreat to :bonk:

You think I am objecting to something that I am not, fail.

Not owning a gun is not cowardly, nor is it sticking one's head in the sand.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

Not quite true. While it is a good thing that it was the teacher and his wife who survived this ordeal if someone had to die I do not think it is good idea to laud those who find themselves in these terrible situations. He is not a hero, he's a survivor and someone died, someone who had a family who are mourning that loss. I object to the glorification of something from which no glory can be found.

I can find stories either way:

Cop Shoots Daughter Mistaken As Intruder

By Associated Press

May 30, 2007, 11:01 AM EDT

STRATFORD, Conn. -- An off-duty New Haven police officer shot and critically wounded his 18-year-old daughter, apparently mistaking her for an intruder after she sneaked out of their Stratford home and re-entered through the basement.

Eric Scott, 41, on the New Haven force for nine years, has not been charged in the Tuesday shooting.

"Mr. Scott was under the impression his daughter had gone to bed for the night," Stratford Capt. Thomas Rodia said. "He did not expect his daughter to be outside or down in the basement."

Investigators said Tasha Scott left her home late Monday to meet a boyfriend. She triggered a backyard motion sensor light as she tried to enter through a basement door.

Awakened by the light, Eric Scott spotted someone moving in the basement bathroom, police said. He fired his department-issued pistol once, hitting the teen in the knee. The bullet traveled up her leg and lodged in her thigh area, police said.

Her father called 911, authorities said.

The teenager underwent surgery and was listed in critical but stable condition Wednesday morning.

Scott has been on leave since being struck by a truck while on duty in November. A telephone listing for him had been disconnected Wednesday morning, and a message left for him at the New Haven department was not immediately returned.

The "someone who died" obviously did not have any regard for his life or the lives of the people he was intruding on. I don't understand your sympathy for the intruder?

In the OP case, there is no sympathy here for the intruder. The discussion here is whether you are safer having a weapon at the ready for home/self defense, or safer without it.

See, I was replying specifically to Ms. Cleo hence the quote above my post.

Sympathy for the intruder? Compassion for his family is more apt considering what I actually wrote.

I can understand that. What the intruder did was obviously illegal and I'm hardly sympathetic towards the outcome; however, the intruder's family probably won't see it the same way. Regardless of what he did, they'll view the entire situation as one of loss since a family member is dead.
