It's a good profession. Why would anyone mock a male nurse?

It's probably due to the nursing field being seen as a "pink collar" profession. In other words, nurses have been predominately women. Society has certain preconceptions about what line of work is suitable for whom.

Working as a secretary, hair stylist or flight attendant are other professions where men would get laughed at. Unless the man is gay, then it's somehow okay. Probably because the gay male stereotype suggests he would be somewhat effeminate.

It's interesting that women are applauded when they break into a male-dominated profession, but if a male goes into a "female profession," he'll get mocked.
