Address Stress - please help!

Hi - I changed my address online with USCIS back in June 2008. Now it is time for me to apply to remove the conditions on my permanent resident card, as it will have been two years since I first received it. However, I recently received a standard letter from USCIS, reminding me to do this, but it was sent to my previous address! It would appear that they have not changed my records. I have filed the change of address online again today, and I want to call USCS to check that they have the correct info. The problem is, I cannot get through on the phone. Is there anything more I should be doing? When I send in my I-751, I don't want them to think that I failed to report my change of address on time.

Thanks!!

02-18-2009 - I-751 filed (Removal of Conditions)

02-20-2009 - NOA1

They always mess up change of address. I changed it online while processing my i-751 and they still sent mail to my previous address. And if you call them, they won't tell you if the change was done or not, which I still don't understand why can they just tells us yes or no. But you're lucky, you still haven't submitted. I'm guessing that you never received a confirmation from them by mail regarding your Change of Address.

My advise is that you change it online also, this way you get a confirmation number, kind of like a receipt that you changed it and I would put this page in your i-751 package just to make sure they receive it. You can even write in a cover letter that you had sent the change of Address by mail but didn't receive a confimation from them, maybe you have proof that you sent it like a Return Receipt that you can also add to the package.

Good Luck

Oh I just read your post one more time and I noticed you had changed your address online the first time. Well if you still have the confirmation page with the number, add this to the package, it is proof that you change your address in a timely manner.

This happened to us as well. When we moved in July 08, I changed O's info online and kept the confirmation printout. I also changed mine (this is required, btw, as the sponsor) but that had to be by mail and I received the official receipt for that in the mail. But then our notice that it was time to do the I-751 (January 09) went to our old address and got forwarded to us at our new address by the post office. I called, and they could tell me nothing. Said they don't have access to particular details. Not helpful. So, before we filed the I-751, I updated the address online again, then sent in the change of address by mail as well. I copied the form and the confirmation page and added those to the I-751 petition when we sent all of that in, just to show that we did what they wanted us to do.... Just like Andersen advises above.

Did you get an NOA for both change of addresses? One for the AR-11 and the other for the I-865 (sponsor)? If so, that's all you need to prove that you changed it with the USCIS. The instructions say to keep copies of both forms when you filed, the NOAs and the I-865 has very specific mailing instructions so you can have prove that you sent it and they received it.

If you have all of that, then there's nothing to worry about.

That's the problem. The confirmation sheet was in my office, however when I lost my job I must have left it there. So it seems that I have no proof that I filed for a change of address. When I send my documentation for my removal of conditions, it will show that I have lived at this address since June 2008.

Okay, here's what I did. In the cover letter accompanying the evidence, I stated that I had changed my address online when I moved to my new address, in the requisite 10 day period. I added that as the recent letter from USCIS was addressed to my previous residence, I had therefore re-submitted the change of address online. I quoted the new reference number.

Hopefully this will suffice. I'm not going to stress about it.

I just spoke to a USCIS rep - apparently when you file an AR11, it only fulfils your legal requirement to file. If you have any paperwork / matters pending with USCIS, they are not updated. As I changed my address after I received my Green card (2yr), the docs they had pertaining to that Green Card maintained the old address. He told me to file my I-751, stating my new address.

if you file the AR-11 online it should change your address on any pending paperwork...

With the exception noted above, all non-U.S. citizens who move within the United States and its territories must submit a Form AR-11 within 10 days after completing the change of address. You can do that here on our website with the Electronic Change of Address tool. If you choose to use this online tool, you can complete an electronic Form AR-11 and notify USCIS to update your address on most pending cases.

but yeah if you mail in the AR-11 while you have paperwork pending you also need to call USCIS to change your address...

  • 2 weeks later...

Just an update - I received the 1-year extension, addressed correctly, about a week after mailing the I-751 package, so it was not a problem. Just make sure you keep them updated with your details, and keep the address-change printout!! :)

Hey guys,

You all sound very informed! I am still in K1 visa process and awaiting my interview date in London but my fiance moved address 2 weeks ago so all the addresses we put down on all the forms are no longer valid. At what stage should I inform them? Sounds like changing online is a waste of space! Do I keep my mouth shut til after the interview or what? I have no idea how to do this either. Aaaah. Why is this whole process so annoying?

JoJo xx
