I skipped a bunch of pages so I'm sure this has been stated, but the fact that the guy is Muslim is probably not very irrelevant. There was a story in the newspaper several years ago where a white Army NCO found out his wife was cheating on him. One day he saw the guy who was banging his wife & he attacked him. He beat the guy to the ground & kicked his head numerous times with enough force to essentially decapitate him.

The point I am making is that anyone is capable of such acts... black, white, asian, arab, rich, poor, etc. If you take Danno's history of posts into context it doesn't take much to assume an underlying desire to stir the pot (he succeeded based on the 7 pages & counting of this thread) & a somewhat bigoted view of the world. What the guy did to his wife was horrible to say the least & I spent a year in Iraq working with Muslims so I know from first hand experience that (by our standards) they treat women poorly, but the vast majority of Muslims don't go to such an extreme. To imply that his being a Muslim is a significant factor leading to such a violent act is therefore weak at best.

Good points. There's nothing in the article (other than the author's implication) that the murder was inspired by religion.

American women who met their Muslim spouses on the internet, vacationed in their spouse's country for a week or two once or twice, then sat back in the United States, pining for "my habeeeeeeebeeeeeeeeeee" until he finally stepped foot off the plane is, by far, no experts in the lives of Muslim woman in a Muslim nations. Furthermore, as "habibti" soon learns, you can take a man out of his country, but you cannot take his country out of him.

Do these men beat their women? Absolutely. Do they beat them because they're all liquored up and in the mood? No. They do it because they CAN. Do these men kill their women? Yep, they sure do. Why? Honor, and no other reason.

you win idiot of the day..and it is hard on vj..cause there are so many dickheads like you

Idiot of the Day? Dickhead?

Hmmmph! Goes to show how much you know because you clearly don't know I'm a (Christian, American) woman living in Egypt, a 90% Muslim nation.

What I know is the level of abuse I see on a regular basis is shocking. Not only is the level of abuse shocking, the precipitating reasons for it are shocking: Disobedience. Burning dinner. Because he felt like it. Because he CAN.

If you'd like details or the horrific crimes against women here, PM me and I'll be happy to tell you all about it. Meanwhile, chew on this:

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is ever-popular here. It was, at one time, illegal. However, last year the immensely powerful religious faction (and the law here is Sharia law) managed to overturn that law and it is once again legal. The numbers are sketchy at best, but between 50% and 90% of all Egyptian women can expect their bits will be cut off for the sole purpose of protecting them from themselves.

Orphans and Orphanages: Orphanages in Egypt are filled to the brim with "orphans," which aren't really orphans in the same sense we (Americans) imagine because they aren't children who's parents are deceased. Instead, they are children who were born out of wedlock. These children live in orphanages until they are old enough to be put out onto the streets to fend for themselves (the boys) or old enough to be married off (the girls), in both cases between the ages of 8 and 10. Until they become adults, they are truly on their own. The government doesn't issue birth certificates for these children, thus they are denied an education and health care. Why? Because a girl/woman who gets pregnant without being married shames her family. This shame can and will lead to death in the poorer families because the family can and will just kill her. She cannot name the father because all he has to do is deny he had any relationship with her - there is no access to DNA testing and paternity suits here - thus absolving himself of any shame. This is all because this government refuses to acknowledge people have sex without being married in this Sharia Law Land, permitting the government itself not to be shamed.

Divorce: Women only recently received the right to a no-fault divorce. Previously, women (and we're only talking about Muslim women; Christian women cannot divorce in Egypt) had to file a claim against their husband and state their specific reasons for wanting to divorce (and shaming the husband in the process), a process that often took years and may not result in a divorce if the judge didn't believe her (the testimony of a woman is only half that of a man). These no-fault divorces require the wife to give back her mahr and she walks away with nothing. Nothing includes her children if her husband wants them (meaning he takes them back to his family to raise - there is no such thing as single dads here). Moreover, she carries the shame of being a divorced woman and single-handedly holds the blame for the marriage falling apart, and this shame is a very real social stigma.

What is clear here is that people see nothing wrong with generalising by type when it confirms their own prejudices.

Again - there's nothing in the article that indicates that the murder was motivated by religious ideology. I'm not discounting the possibility - but surely the only honest opinion about this specific case is to say "I don't know".

Then why do you keep insisting it's about religion?

Help me recall the minister in Colorado Ted haggerd?

It came to light that he was a **, having sex with a male prostitute.

That story was covered wall to wall, did it have anything to do with his religion? Yes and no, it's

the same thing here with the Muslim dude.

Guy sets out to change the image of Muslims and ends up fitting the worst stereo-type imaginable.

To me it was just an ironical story because of the hypocritical angle, same as the Ted Haggerd story.

People you are reading way to deep in this story

It is interesting, the 'if you think this was a Muslim/Islamic issue you must be a dumb, generalizing bigot' gambit. That stating as much reveals 'prejudice.'

The style of this murder is most definitely Muslim/Islamic. It is indeed ironic, per the tone of the original story, this gentleman ran a TV station devoted to changing the post 911 image of Muslim/Islamic culture and beliefs.

To be sure, the Muslim world is as diverse as any other, with varying beliefs and practices, but like it or lump it, beheading is associated these days with that group, diversity not withstanding.

[And yes, I understand in the annals of human history, Islam is not the only faith to use this particular form of killing.]

Sorry, you are not getting it. I am no expert on being muslim by any means, but there is nothing to my knowledge inherent in being a muslim that makes one more likely to engage in domestic violence, and the more devout one is, the less that should be true. I think you have mistaken muslim with something else.

You can't be serious in calling this domestic violance! HE CUT HER HEAD OFF! An this is something that is more prevalent in the muslim world than anywhere else that I have heard of.

Just think... this guy was a 'moderate'. Can you imagine the damage he would have done if he was an extremist? ::shudders::

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
