Wasn't he the the guy in Iraq? I think he was alive right? That was just horrible. I don't know how a family could ever recover from that. I think most people would want a loved one to die peacefully. I think I would be utterly destroyed to know a loved one suffered like that before death.

So now that we have a bunch of Vjers here from Muslim countries... lets get :ot2:

based on the article by OP... was it pertinent to say that the man who beheaded his wife was a muslim? Did the article give sufficient cause that this was an important fact?

Did his faith have a part in his actions?

Is this just randomn domestic violence by an outraged man?

Hmmm... i don't know that it was an important fact. But the media does that all the time... i can imagine similar headlines with other ethnic/religious/cultural groups... i.e., Catholic Priest Charged with... Ecuadorian Immigrant Does This... Nigerian Man Blah Blah Blah... (these are just examples...)

i don't think there is a correlation between one's culture/religion/ethnicity and the crime one commits. i think that there are just some really disturbed (and crooked) people out there, and this man is a case in point. This story is especially f*ed up.

The intended subtext is quite plain and as someone said earlier its pretty clear the author has sensationalised the story to achieve a certain effect.

In short - what the author wants people to draw from this is that while this man was part of an activist group that (apparently) tries to correct misperceptions about the muslim community, his (alleged) murder of his wife confirms the underlying stereotypes.

Stereotypes that a surprisingly large % of OT VJ posters buy into, despite having foreign spouses. I find that odd. Every country has its stereotype and I am sure none of the spouses fit that type and yet...
Have you taken out the percentage who are NATURALISED (originally from foreign culture in the first place)?

No. How could I know that? Statistically it is no more likely for a muslim to beat up or kill a spouse than any other group, regardless of how some people believe muslims are brought up to treat women.

Yeah, just a bit.

But as we love to say in the west; "who are we to judge?", especially when we don't know every single fact.

Hacking heads off still is over the top

Of course it is, it's a terrible thing to do. I can't think of one excuse to mitigate against how terrible it is.

can chopping off your wife's head even be considered a crime of passion?

it is not like, man catches wife in bed with another man, he grabs a gun and shoots them both...

chopping off your wife's head... that is... gruesome and sick.

It does imply certain stereotypes. But this is a muslim man and muslim women do not typical share the freedoms of western women. She had a restraining order against him and filed for divorce. Now in many instances this behavior exhibited by both parties has resulted in spousal homicide in ALL cultures.

given his place in society (i.e. not a poor, unemployed, drug usage) it is fair to look at other factors which would precipitate this action.

Really? As a Muslim, Western woman that's news to me.

Of course this is an absolutely horrific crime...that goes w/o saying.

But, America is filled with many horrific acts of violence typically carried out by non-Muslim Americans. For example, why is it that the leading cause of death for pregnant women in America is murder at the hands of their baby's father? Talk about a societal hatred for women and children! And, why is it that America has much, much, much, MUCH higher crime and murder rates than just about all Middle Eastern countries combined (excluding those in war, obviously).

Acting like Islam has anything to do with this crime is just shallow thinking...but why does that not surprise me.

That's actually rather surprising, given that the ethnic/national diversity of the VJ membership. You'd think people would be more open-minded.

You would think, right? This is one of the big horrors of VJ for me - realizing how shockingly ignorant and hateful so many people here are. I really thought this site would include people more enlightened than the typical, uneducated segment of the American population, but, it wasn't the first time I've been wrong.

Here are some comments from people who alllegedly knew the man:

http://deenport.com/main/messages/viewtopic.php?t=23716

This was not an honor killing. I wish that people, including you Rabbi, would stop perpetuating that erroneous speculation. MO Hassan was married before to a non-Muslim woman, and had two children with her as well. He divorced the first wife without killing her. He was not a religious Muslim. Bridges TV was nothing more to him than an opportunity to make money. He did not fast or pray as is required in the religion. HE often said that he did not miss Pakistan, or wish to visit. He was very Americanized. What this was is an example of is his rage, and domestic abuse... not an "honor killing." I know all this becuase I used to work there. Leave the religion of Islam out of it.

# Ex-Employee of Bridges TV February 15th, 2009 at 10:36 pm

"Here are the facts. I’m just your average white American male. I worked for these two directly day in and day out - trips around the country with them, etc. This has nothing to do with Muslim extremism or the religion in any way. The fact is that Mo Hassan is just a piece of HUMAN GARBAGE. The only emotion he would ever show other than anger is complete blankness. He just plain is NOT a good person and did this out of anger. He had been abusing Aasya for some time, ran the nanny off the road with HIS kids in HER car. I believe this to be premeditated as there’s nothing in that television station with which he’d be able to do this. From what I know they still haven’t found the weapon even though he allegedly drove directly to the police station less than a mile away. The attack occured directly in front of a security camera that he placed. The police have the tape. I just want my mental image of this horrible event to go away."

Nancy Sanders, the television station's news director for 2 1/2 years, said co-workers traded stories about Hassan's apparent violent streak, including one which had him running his wife's car off the road while the couple's two young children were inside. Aasiya herself never spoke of it, she said.

"I just do not feel it was an honor killing," Sanders added. "I think it was domestic abuse that got out of control."

"Ms. Zubair was his third wife. Both of his earlier wives filed divorce on the same grounds of severe domestic violence and abuses."

"

The American Muslim community, desperate for its own English channel in the United States, said yes to the call and collected millions of dollars and handed it over to him. I personally know people who collected fifty thousand or more in a day or two for this cause. It was not Hassan, the donors but trusted the organizations standing behind him.

Muzzammil Hassan put that money in his personal pocket and moved into a huge property with stables and horses. Nobody was there to question that how much money was spent on the actual project and how much was spent on his new but lavish lifestyle. None of our organizations bothered to look into it and inform their members of any concerns."

Sounds like he was just a plain old, run of the mill scum bag.

nick was a cousin of a friend of mine in the shooting sports community. nick was into martial arts, and had a wanderlust, but he got into water that was a little too deep. nick used steroids, and had a confrontational personality. he went to the ME looking for trouble, entered iraq illegally, and discovered that running with the big dogs can be dangerous.

i saw the video. it's gruesome, but if you wanna know how it's done, google it. nick's killing is reason enough to turn the whole country of iraq into a sheet of glass, in my opinion. check the stats, and you will see the current combat kill ratio is somewhere around 1,700 to 120,000. the American fighting man is still the best trained and equipped in all the world, and the numbers show the results of our investment in them.
