Label me whatever you like, I really don't care that much. Like it or not, being a muslim is not a religion about treating women like ######, no more than christianity is.

i never said they treat them like XXXX what i stated was the facts about the place a woman holds in Muslim culture. It is not on the same level as men hence the reason honor killings and beatings happen. but we can agree to disagree.

Let's see a list of Muslim nations and their women's-rights:
  • Saudi Arabia -- women's rights?
  • Pakistan - attempted to model legal system off Saudi Arabia, and failed miserably; hudood ordinances promulgated by warcriminal Zia (1977-1988) still on books; abyssmal as big-picture
  • Taliban regime in Afghanistan, 1996-2001 - abyssmal
  • Iran -- since 1979, abyssmal (though not necessarily up to Canada/US even prior, definitely decline)
Note that Saudi Arabia specifically likes to consider itself (being self-appointed guardian of two most-holies) to be the model for Sharia--enough said!

M. Cleo I think you are confusing facts with Politically Correct propaganda. All the major religions view women as subordinate to men. When someone is viewed as subordinate then they are generally treated/mistreated accordingly. Muslims are just generally the worst in their treatment of women. And most Imams say a man is allowed to hit a disobedient wife. The fact of the matter is that the modern world of thought is passing the ME by and the spread of radical islam is dragging the world backwards. If you want to practice a religion, that's ok. Just practice it liberally and keep it to yourself and realize that what might have been ok 1000 years ago isn't ok today.

Thank you, Madame Cleo and others, for your efforts to tackle absurdity and preconceived notions.

Sometimes i feel like i would like to institute "Visit with a Muslim Day" at my house in Brooklyn. Just to invite over folks who have these fixed thoughts about Islam. My husband and i would serve tea and something to eat. They'd see that my husband does not relegate me to the kitchen, and i'm allowed to say/do whatever i want. There are no other wives in our tiny apartment, or elsewhere for that matter. We don't wield sabers or wear all black or have long beards. We even use toilet paper.

In fact, we don't do much of anything different from other folks.

We got re-re-married in a local masjid here in the US, just to suit some obscure requirement by the Moroccan consulate.

The imam told me in front of my husband, as well as the other male witnesses:

"If your husband treats you badly, or tries to influence you in a negative way, please come and tell me...

I'll take his teeth."

You are right in your post. If this man beheaded his wife, it was, IMO, for no other reason than she betrayed him for filing for a divorce. Muslim women have decades to go before they get equal rights with men. It does not matter that they live in a free country, the religion will always force their culture.

This is clearly typical and expected behavior, much like cannibalism in Brazil.

Put the two together and we've got ourselves a deli.

I am not defending the absurd and intolerant practices that go on in the name of religion. That's a completely different kettle of fish.

I am however more than aware that all religions have been used to create nasty and hate filled divisions between what could otherwise be much more harmonious communities. Bigots, greedy and power crazed individuals use whatever tools they can. Religion happens to be one of the easiest to use tool of division. How sad is that?

You noted four Muslim nations, one of which our government turns a blind eye despite its human rights violations.

What about the 35 other nations where Islam is the religious majority?

(i agree with you that the Taliban is an abomination)

Lucky you. Other muslim women from the Middle East (especially) may not be as lucky. These are not preconcieved notions where Middle-Easter Muslim women are concerned. Take for example the woman who was raped by 4 men in Saudi Arabia and was then sentenced to prison with 100 strokes of the cane - FOR ADULTERY. This was forced sex, not Adultery. Where is the outrage?

MS. CLEO don't get get me wrong, I personally have great respect for the Muslim faith. I don't agree with all their beliefs but the Western world(Christianity) owes the Muslim faith a lot! We wouldn't have the developments in math, science and technology that we have now if it hadn't been for our Muslim brothers ingenuity throughout early history. Most great advances came as the result of Europeans taking knowledge from Muslims and improving on it. The whole Industrial Revolution is a result of Muslim ideas adapted to industry. Irrigation, construction, Ect.
