Prominent Orchard Park man charged with beheading his wife

Orchard Park police are investigating a particularly gruesome killing, the beheading of a woman, after her husband — an influential member of the local Muslim community — reported her death to police Thursday.

Police identified the victim as Aasiya Z. Hassan, 37. Detectives have charged her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, with second-degree murder.

"He came to the police station at 6:20 p.m. [Thursday] and told us that she was dead," Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew Benz said late this morning.

Muzzammil Hassan told police that his wife was at his business, Bridges TV, on Thorn Avenue in the village. Officers went to that location and discovered her body.

Muzzammil Hassan is the founder and chief executive officer of Bridges TV, which he launched in 2004, amid hopes that it would help portray Muslims in a more positive light.

The killing apparently occurred some time late Thursday afternoon. Detectives still are looking for the murder weapon.

"Obviously, this is the worst form of domestic violence possible," Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III said today.

Authorities say Aasiya Hassan recently had filed for divorce from her husband.

"She had an order of protection that had him out of the home as of Friday the 6th [of February]," Benz said.

Muzzammil Hassan was arraigned before Village Justice Deborah Chimes and sent to the Erie County Holding Center.

The reason it was reported he was a Muslim is because he was an influential Muslim in his society thus making it relevant to report. The report doesn't say he beheaded his wife because he is Muslim.

There is absolutely NO excuse for domestic violence. If it's happening, the victim must secretly contact a network that can protect the victim and help the victim find secret housing if needed. Also, the police need to be awre of it and a protection order needs to be filed for, just as this woman did.

Any spouse that is violent needs to immediatley go to anger management as well as personal counseling, and never mind what the other spouse does, or does not, do. It's advisable to move out until emotions are stabilized. There must be absolutely NO alcohol or drug use as well.

Otherwise, it WILL escalate. It does not get better on its own, only worse. This case is domestic violence, just escalated further than most.

I know this is right out of the DV handbook but, it's just not an absolute truth.

It does not "ALWAYS: get worse, I've known of cases where it was a seldom or isolated incident over many many years of marriage.

I absolutely don't say this to excuse DV in anyway, but this line where if your mate (man or woman) pushes, or even hits someone once.... they are Absolutely going to continue and even escalate is just not true.

If we were to take the definition of what Domestic violence has come to mean (between any family member) half the people in this country would be guilty at some time.

I'm not suggesting a person who Beats on another person is safe, in fact I am not even addressing these very serious cases but domestic Violence has come to encompass so much (and so little) you can not diagnose every case the same as was done above.

Well it is a crime that generally takes place behind closed doors - and without demonstrable injuries its often one person's word against another. Certainly I don't doubt there are false accusations - but if anything domestic violence (like child abuse) is probably somewhat underreported.

My point was, domestic abuse does not always escalate or continue.

I knew one couple, where she slapped him in the face, he slapped her right back, she never did it again.... and neither did he, it's over twenty years.
