I took some Chinese (Mandarin) in high school. My teacher was from Taiwan, and had an arranged marriage. He said that when he was learning about American culture, he was surprised to find that we say "I love you" to our wives frequently, because Chinese people do not. He tried it one day on his wife in the kitchen, and she immediately felt his forehead and asked if he was sick.

Brad,

I'm like Nagi...I can't say it here. :P

Most of it I learned from my best friend growing up (although her dilect is Gulf Arabic so some of it was a bit off talking to him in Egyptian Arabic...yes there is a difference ). But for some reason and this goes for English as well...cursing in any language is easier to learn. I have figured out why. When we curse, we say it loud and typically pronounce the word properly (making sure those that offended us hear us curse them!) hehe :P So its the same in any language...they pronounce it so well, how could you not learn it? Right?

But of course, I learned: I love you, please, thank you and etc.

Ana mish muhandisa (I am not an engineer).

I had gotten a Pimsleur's book and since the statement is accurate about me - (and he is one) - it was the first thing I thought to say. Plus its not the typical hello, how are you kind of statement. I do not know any swears in his language.

"We are the real countries,

Not the boundaries drawn on maps,

With the names of powerful men.

That's all I've wanted -

To walk in such a place with you,

On an earth without maps."
