What were the fist few things you learned to say in your SOs language, and why?

This was an interesting topic that originated in another forum.

My first Russian phrases were;

1) My name is

2) Excuse me, can you help me?

3) I need to go to ______ (hotel name, address, business location)

4) Tell me please, where is the toilet?

The why part is obvious :lol:

"bing pi ju" = cold beer (most important words)

"eh fu yi ren!" - hey waitress (works in a restaraunt whe you need more beer)

"wo bu ji dao" = i don't know (useful in business)

"bu yow pung wo" = don't touch me (used for beggars)

"wo cao" = F U (in case the beggars don't get the hint)

"ma nega bi" = there's your mother's p$$$y (last resort with the beggars)

i knew these words before i met the girl. since meeting her i have learned to say:

"tai shi wo qi tsu" = she is my wife (literally, she is my old master)

wife can also be "fu yen" (man's person) and a couple of other ways to say.

First things in Russian? I remember learning "Menya Zavut...." My name is... "Ochin Priyatna" Pleased to meet you. I was supervising a construction project in Odessa and used "Naprava" ( to the right) and "Levra" (to the left) and "Priamo" (Straight ahead) a lot. Usually when shouting and in a panic as something was swinging somewhere it shouldn't be!

I can't say it here.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Zdrustie=Hello

kak cte=What's up?

Kazvum se=My name is...

And the list goes on and on. I have been visiting BG frequently since 2005, and I have a lot of friends there, so I wanted to learn the language. My wife is going to try to teach me again after many failed attempts with phrase books and audio CDs. :) Maybe it's better for now that I don't understand everything. My future mother-in-law and I get along great! :lol:

Actually, the term Tsu, is given as an honorific that a well respected sage would be given. For instance, Lao Tsu, Sun Tsu, Li Tsu. So the word "master" should be seen in an oriental way, as in teacher of a school of thought that also has military/political authority. This concept really doesn't translate well in western thought. Regardless, Tsu is the one to which all honor, obedience, and respect is given, and to whom it is deserved within his/her realm.

The use of this expression by a foreigner always suprises a Chinese listener. It's not something you can learn in a book on the Chinese language. You have to be married to one to know it.
