A premarital course and counseling is required in the catholic church. We are only married legally so we did not do this yet, but the day we get married in the church (some time in the future), then we will have to do it.

Caro

it is a good idea for couples, who ahve had issues with shared values or communications..also, for whirlwind relationships

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I had lived with my girlfriend for the three years prior to our marriage as an integrated family, so I didn't consider it.

That said, if you have not lived with your SO for a substantial period of time or are a prior divorcee, I would strongly encourage it. There are enough skeletons in the closet and divorce stories on this site to indicate it might have value.

Yep.. we went and it was affirming.. we started in on the questions and we knew the answers and could rightly predict what our spouse would say. We only had one session our counselor said we had communicated well and were well suited.

I think the point of premarital counseling is as a double check you know how to communicate well and that you have discussed most of the important themes to make sure you are both on the same page. It should be affirming I think.

Again I was told not to marry my ex husband by a premarital counselor.. so looking back I shouldn't have been surprised!

My husband and I did not have any sort of pre-marital counseling. To be honest, it never even entered our minds. The only time I've even heard of it in my area is through the Catholic church which requires almost a year of pre-marriage classes and things to even tie the knot. Neither of us are terribly religious and we had a 90-day window so obviously we didn't bother with the church wedding.

I think that if two people have already planned to get married, even the words of a counselor are not going to change it. This is evidenced by some of the people who have already replied saying they had 'warnings' from a counselor but got married/continued the relationship anyways.

We did a pre-Cana class through the Church. It wasn't counseling, but more of an opportunity for couples to talk to each other about important topics. I have to say that it wasn't all that helpful for us, particularly, because planning a smooth immigration for him meant that a lot of issues, like where we'd live, whose career would take priority, finances, expectations, had been discussed.

But there were plenty of couples there who clearly had never thought about *anything.*

I think the fact that I failed to heed the warning of the 1st counselor says more about my age and maturity than anything.. who listens to any authority figure at 21? I knew it all..

If the same thing had happened in my 30's I would have walked away.. period.
