I have been looking for a Pastor to marry us. The two that I have contacted have asked about our plans to obtain premarital counseling before the marriage. Did other VJ'ers get this too?

Anyone have an international premarital counseling experience?

Tried it once, didn't help

Yeah, the counselor that did the premarital counseling of my first marriage flagged many issues for my ex and I. I think he was even suggesting that we needed to wait, but I was too stupid to listen. I went back and read our "tests" and I realized that if a friend of mine had shown me the same test results, I would have said, "What in the hell are you thinking!?" Live and learn.

That's what the priest told us but I chose not to listen either. Duh

We didn't do it - though I think it's a good idea.

In Florida you can get married quicker (normally you have to wait 3 days from when you get your marriage license) and at a cheaper price if you do premarital counseling.

I don't think we'll be going to pre-marital counseling because we haven't made any plans to do so yet, but I'd love to if we can make it happen.

For those of you who went before and had "unfavorable" results, do you mind being more specific? I don't mean to pry, but I'm really interested in the red flags that people choose to ignore and why they do so.

Neither one of us thought about doing this before we came to the U.S. and then it would have been more difficult to find a bilingual counselor. We would have needed one though because my husband knew no English when he arrived.

I know premarital counseling is more commonly requested by pastors, but that doesn't mean it's a bad idea for people who aren't religious.

True.

I'm no religious either but wouldn't mind going to see a priest since hubby is Catholic.

i never said it was a bad idea. the idea never crossed our minds. i don't think it would change anything, though.

In my religion there is nothing as premarital counseling, plus it was never a part of discussion between me and my husband.

Well 4.5 years of being married, all is good, so I guess we did it good without the counseling.

Hmm, maybe I should not have mentioned "pastor" as I think it skewed my poll. Sorry about that. My question was not suppose to be directed around religion, all though in my case, the people I asked were pastors.

I am more interested in knowing in general if people sought premarital counseling or if it was a requirement of the official (religious or not) presiding in your marriage.
