My uncle (Accountant) had said before I left that I could open an RBC Centura account here in Raleigh, and then talk to a manager about getting them to get my credit information from RBC in Canada - I've had my chequing and Visa through RBC for 8 years...I'm wondering how open these people will be about this idea?

I have this account and yes, they are happy to use pull your Canadian credit history, so they have told me.

<3 Fab!

You may want to double check.

When I was in a branch in NC, I asked about that, but I was told that since I have a SSN they would use that instead, even if I asked them to use my SIN.

Of course, this was just one person, but she was the branch manager, and seemed to know the Canadian side of things, so it is definitely worth asking about :)

Just as a follow up to this, I received this in email today, they state the information about the Canadian credit rating in the second paragraph:

I have an RBC account in Canada but was told since they don't have a branch in PA I can't open an RBC account here, which sucks. I was hoping to, since they would have my credit history, etc.

I guess the Branch Manager really didn't know what she was talking about when it came to pulling credit :)

She WAS very helpful though, taking the time to stay on the phone with RBC when they were having technical issues...learned probably way too much about her. Apparently her ex was on the USS Cole when it was attacked. Why I remember that, I don't know

$#@!%$# .............it gets better, now I'm in a really grump mood.

We went and applied for a joint credit card so that I could ride in on my husband's coat tails. Keep in mind this is the man who singularly got our mortgage last Oct in Northern Virginia (to give you an idea of the housing prices)...no problem, his credit score is in excellent shape

Wachovia denied our joint application for a new VISA...even though the chick at the bank said that this was a sure way to go, no worries...she even understood the situation since she herself was an immigrant. Not enough credit history they said - which is an obvious comment on my status.

I feel like I have no where left to turn since now there are 2 denied inquiries on my record.....and I don't even have a credit score!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We're going back to our own bank tomorrow to beg I guess and see if they'll use my Cdn SIN to have a look at my Cdn history

Well, we are actually putting the RBC credit thing to the test. We are applying for a pre-approval on a mortgage. The mortgage person sent us the 'Canadian' pre-qualifying form (probably because although we have a good credit score here, our 'credit streams' have not existed for 2 years yet).

They aren't using my credit at all, of course, since I don't work, but they now have all my Husband's U.S. and Canadian information.

Get a printout of your Canadian credit history. I don't know if showing it to them will matter, but if they have to do less work, they might be interested in at least examining it.

I am ticked tonight, I must vent.

Got a note in the mail tonight saying I was turned down for a Target Card! Yes, really......a TARGET card. Due to insufficient credit history at 2 of the 3 agencies (Equifax, and the other 2 whose names escape me atm).

I expected to have very little history of course, but I am joint account holder at the bank, have bill accounts in my name so there should be SOMETHING after 1.5 yrs....but apparently not .

I have had a CC in Canada for 20 yrs for pete's sake. And now I guess I have to go the silly 'secured-card' route or pretend I'm in the 50's and have my husband co-sign) - which also makes me feel like a less then pathetic human with bad credit - which I am not.

Big HUGE GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I opened up an account at RBC here in Canada last year.. and then was able to get accounts through RBC USA (which is called RBC Centura). So now I have chequing and savings accounts, a credit card, overdraft, and even a line of credit in the US (and i'm not even there yet! 10 more days). So you may want to go that route. RBC is a nightmare for keeping records straight (US banking technology is in the stone age compared to Canada), but if you are willing to call and complain once a month to straighten out your online records, and want to have banking products in the US, they are the way to go.

They are actually called RBC Bank now (which makes no sense to me...Royal Bank of Canada Bank...ya, whomever made that change, obviously never actually looked at the Full name! )

Glad you have a great start for down here...the only thing is, once you Get down here, and get your SSN, make sure you change your information with RBC Bank (including your SSN) so that it will transfer to your credit reports down here.

And I hope that you will live near a branch...because changing your SSN will probably entail you going to a branch to do it. But I would call just to check.

I'm really sorry :(

I know the feeling of denial.

Your hubby wouldn't happen to be military, or a DOD contractor would he? :innocent:

I've been wondering about you lately...and I don't want you to give up. I'll do my darndest to find out some suggestions for you, if you want :) Love to help a neighbour :)

Oh, and don't worry too much about the 2 inquries. Since you have no credit score, you have nothing to detract from. It's when you get to 6 or 10 inquiries that you should begin to worry :)

Just an update, the RBC did pre approve us for a mortgage today. This is not to say that other banks wouldn't have - we were turned down by ING Direct for not having 2 years of credit history here (although we have almost a year and it's excellent - that's not good enough for them).

I have nothing to offer to this thread other than I am appalled at the ineffiencies and heartbroken at people's experiences in obtaining credit here. I hope those of you that have had such horrible experiences get things resolved soon. (F)

Thanks guys - I'm so glad I have people to commiserate with!

No update yet - we couldn't make it to the bank last Sat morning, so we'll try for this Sat - weekdays we don't get home early enough before the bank closes..oh well :(

I will now get my Canadian credit history (we think the mortgage broker who didn't want to use it last Oct may have a copy, fingers crossed) and then of course I can write back with additional information to each agency here who sent me a letter and see if I can get anything further on that.

I purpose used my TD VISA on Sunday just to keep the thing alive....I'm scared to have zero available credit should it be needed. I still maintain my TD bank account and it has cash in it, we use it when we're up there.
