My LCD HDTV Just Went Out and Just Past Warranty

I talked with a repairman over the phone this morning and he said it sounds like the systems control panel needs replacing ($200) plus $100 labor. It's a Philips 32" LCD 720p that we bought back in November of 2007. Philips had sent an offer for an extended warranty right after we purchased the TV and I tossed it aside. It's been a great TV otherwise and the repairmen says they're good TV's. I guess it was just my bad luck.

Yeah, I know, but I wouldn't want to just dump it. I'd like to see it last me 10 years or more, if it's possible. It has a really good picture - the blacks are really crisp. I was thinking about getting a Sony, but when I saw the two side by side, I thought the picture on the Philips was better.

If it wasn't for bad luck, you'd have no luck at all , Steven. :(

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Aw, that sucks.

I've had terrible luck w/ Philips stuff. We bought a Philips TV a couple of years ago that croaked after two months, believe it or not. Fortunately, we bought it at Costco and were able to return it for a full refund. We also had a Philips DVD player that died (with DVD in it, of course) within a year. I bought a Philips CD player about 10 years ago that also died after about a year. Anecdotes, I know, but it seems to be commonly held that they make a lot of junk. No more Philips stuff for us!

I've had better luck w/ Panasonic. Now is a good time to buy a TV!

We bought our LCD Philips just over a year ago at Costco and we've never had a problem. Sorry to hear that Steven - cause that blows! And I agree with you about the blacks, they're incredible on ours.

Where can you get a 32" for $300?

Costco, Sams, Wal-Mart. Maybe even Circuit City since they're going out of business.

720 is pretty cheap nowadays and it's possible to get a brand-new "generic" (which is actually not saying much since LCD is still a pretty new market and the "no-names" are probably pretty competitive with the "named" brands.)

If you have to spend $300 to fix that one, do it. Otherwise, save up a few more pennies and upgrade to 1080 w/120hz, blu-ray, surround sound, etc. Or, head down to the thrift store and buy an old clunker, go to that one website and get your $40 discount on some new digital rabbit ears, and you're all set!

I have had similar experiences with Sony products.

I agree. If your TV is 32" or smaller, I've read that most people cannot even tell the difference. The 32" is a perfect fit for our bedroom - we're about 8' away from the screen.

Even the cheapest no name 32's I have seen are close to $400. Check out the warranty on the no names. On some of them, by the time you follow their rules, it will be close to the cost of a new set. I am not up to date on the Vizio warranty, but a year or so ago you had to pay $150, plus ship it in box that you had to by from them, etc, bringing the cost of a warranty claim to the $300 range. If you needed service, the money you saved over buying a name brand was gone.

On a 32 the difference is minute. You'd have to see them side by side to make the call.
