i have no self control. then i hate myself afterward. ughh!

Yep, you and me both. Which is why I'm doomed to yo-yo between 210-224 for the rest of my days. Until my knees become so ridden with athritis that I can't work out any more. And then I'll become a space-hopper........

If you need to snack between meals for example, I'd recommend nuts or seeds, which are high in fats, but they are essential fatty acids that will actually lower your cholesterol and help you to lose bad fat weight.

Do dry roasted peanuts count? Cuz them's the only nuts I eat.

Pistachios? Macademias, pecans. I think the raw versions are healthier, but with sunflower seeds, I can only eat them if they are roasted and salted.

No, not pistachios, but the heavily salted peanuts they sell in the pubs here. KP is the popular brand here, but I've found this wiki entry on a U.S. firm that sells them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planters

Oh, and how I did when I was a 70's child (I'd look a proper mong on one now though!! )

I have done 1227 calories and 31% was from fat. I need to get that lower. Of course 7 grams were from tuna so that isn't quite so bad.

Jim, IMO - focusing too much on total fat intake is not that effective. All fats, like carbs, are not created equal. If you need to snack between meals for example, I'd recommend nuts or seeds, which are high in fats, but they are essential fatty acids that will actually lower your cholesterol and help you to lose bad fat weight.

I've been using this product for about a year now. Udo's EFA Blend - you can find it at the Vitamin Shoppe.

An ideal 2:1 ratio of omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids, proven by research to benefit cardiovascular health, enhance stamina and energy, and improve general health and well-being. Certified Organic.

Great info there.

I am focusing on what the dietitian gave me and also from what I have read. It is wise to keep fat grams under 30% of calorie intake. I also do omega 3 supplement and vitamins. So far so good, on January 19th I weighted 292 and I weighed 270 at the gym this morning.

I was doing pretty good low-carbing and then I got married. After gaining 60 or 70 pounds in one year of marriage, I am back low-carbing, and the weight is coming off again. Hopefully, by summer, I will be able to get rid of the "tent-look" again.

I hear that. When I first met Claudeth I was about 230 but ballooned up to 292 in about 3 1/2 years. I am trying to change my eating habits, a complete life style change. I think I might be over-doing it a bit but I will eventually find a good ratio to get me to the weight I want and then will have to experiment with what is needed to maintain the weight.

Tell me that when you get a massive box of chocolates and a home cooked meal with 'all your favourites' for Valentines :jest:

I got something "better" when I woke up this morning, sure to keep me from wandering for a while!

She's good, I'll give you that. However, you haven't got through the day, yet

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Some thoughts on weight loss/diet/exercise:

1) Diets don't work, according to the studies. People either can't stick with the diet because it's too restrictive, and, basically, your body is smarter than you and is such that it will adapt to restricting food by slowing the metabolism.

2) Slow (1-2pounds a week) and steady (long-term commitment) wins the race.

3) Some wise person upthread mentioned that genetics are a factor and that where one's setpoint is, and whether one is healthy at a comparatively higher weight, is something largely outside of our control. Having reasonable expectations helps you keep your long-term commitment.

4) Exercise equipment calorie counters are usually inaccurate and should be taken with a grain of salt (unless you are watching your sodium intake. ;) )

4b) It is easier to refrain from eating 600 calories than it is to exercise it off.

4c) That said, most of the studies seem to say that being fit is more important, all else being equal, than being thin.

5) Use a tape measure in addition to the scale. If you're exercising and eating properly, you may first lose weight, and then find that you plateau. But you might be becoming healthier and more compact due to muscle. That's good information to have.

6) If you are exercising, try to think of it in terms of goals you want to achieve that are independent of your weight loss goals. A belt in martial arts? Improve your mile time? Walk three miles without being exhausted? Whatever. The idea is to give yourself as many axes of evaluation as possible.

E.g, I've started learning tae kwon do. I love it, and the workouts are intense and a lot of fun. I've gained three pounds since starting. But I've lost an inch off of my waist and I am noticeably more toned and I am stronger and more flexible. If I were only looking at the scale, I wouldn't evaluate my fitness properly.

7) Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. (E.g., cut out sodas, pre-packaged foods, etc., as much as possible)

8 ) Learn to cook. Even if all you're doing is grilling a chicken breast and tossing it onto a bed of spinach leaves, you'll be eating better than you would be opening a can.

9) Learn to use spices. It means you need to use less fat and salt to make a meal taste good.

10) Don't fear all fats! Fat is a nutrient. You need some of it; you just need to make sure it comes from good sources. YMMV, but I find that if I have a small amount of high-quality, full-fat ice cream, I am much more satisfied and eat fewer calories than I do if I have low-fat ice cream.
