Expired Green Card?

My wife plans on traveling to her home country this summer...which will be after her 2 year green card expires. If we apply for the conditions to be removed 90 days prior to that expiration date and she has no new 10 year card in hand because the process takes 6 months, how can she travel out of country this summer? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

When she submits her I-751 to USCIS she will receive a receipt back called an NOA - Notice of Action. This will inform her that they have received her application and will process it and contact her if they need further information. It will also include a paragraph that says that the receipt notice itself acts as a one year extension of her conditional green card status and is good for work and travel purposes. She carries the receipt with her expired greencard and the two of them together are her proof of legal status in the US. (Make a copy of the receipt to keep at home as well).

If she hasn't received the receipt notice and it is getting close to the time of her travel, she can also make an Infopass appointment at your closest USCIS office, bring the expired or soon to expire green card, her unexpired passport and proof of travel arrangements. She will ask them to put an I-551 stamp in her passport that acts like a green card and is good for one year. They will check that she has indeed filed the I-751 by using her A number from her green card before issuing the stamp.

So, there are two options available.

all she needs is the expired Green card + the one year extension letter that the USCIS will send her after sending the I-751 application.

The letter in fact extends the green card for an additional year. She can also get an info pass, and ask the local USCIS to stamp her passport.
