"In Chongqing City of Sichuan Province in China, a little boy who can't eat candy yet already knows how to smoke and curse, due to the bad influence of some adults at the local food market where his parents earn a living selling fish."

Better to smoke than to be obese as so many American kids are.

It's true, most kids who smoke eventually quit but very few obese children loose the weight into adulthood.

Way to go Danno, your logic is impeccable, as usual :)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I can remember puffing on a cigarette when I was about 3 or 4. Bad influences, big brother smoked so I thought it was cool

Actually I think the health risks of obesity Vs. smoking are about equal.

I think smoking also messes with the blood vessels in your brain...if you suffer a brain injury you're less likely to be able to repair the injury because of the screwed up vessels. i'd rather be fat than have a brain injury that won't repair properly :P

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

I'd rather fight than switch.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I think it also buggers up your immune system generally. The air quality over parts of China is notoriously bad - I suspect people have enough working against them without adding smoking to the mix.

Do you have statistics to prove that.

If an obese child loses weight as they go through puberty and grow up, the damage to their body by being obese prior is probably nothing compared to damage to lungs and other things that smoking can cause. It seems the body would need more time to repair the lung situation than a body would need to repair from being heavy. Even old people who lose a bunch of weight greatly reduce their risk of heart disease. And there aren't medicines, like cholesterol meds for heart disease, for people who smoke to make their lungs all better. And do you really think all the obese adults have been that way since childhood? I know many people who were skinny kids and teens and later in life just gained a lot of weight.

In the whole "obesity vs smoking" debate, it's not unusual for teenage girls to take up smoking. Smoking curbs your appetite and with teenage girls (and older women too), the idea of "keeping thin at any cost" can win out over whatever health issues may arise due to smoking.

A similar reason is why they gave troops cigarettes in previous wars. Smoking reduced the hunger that soldiers might feel.

I've know quite a few smokers who, when they were trying to quit or had done so, gained weight. They turned to food. That's why the nicotine patch may not work by itself. What the smoker wants is more than nicotine, but the orally-fixated habit of puffing on a cigarette.

This is sad. Smoking is much more common in China, and I think there isn't much of a "smoking is bad for you" ideology there. In fact, giving a carton of cigarettes as a gift is common, and one of the traditions in a wedding reception is that the bride goes around lighting all the male guests' cigarettes. For men it's seen as normal, but for women it's frowned upon. There's also no age requirement. When my fiancee was a child, her father would send her to a nearby store to pick up cigarettes and beer.

On my last trip, I noticed small "no smoking" signs in some restaurants. I think it had something to do with the Olympics. The government probably wanted restaurants less smoky for foreign visitors. If they stick with that, it's going to take a while. Smoking and drinking in restaurants is very common, and very few have segregated smoking and non-smoking sections.
