On the site it says use ACCO fasteners. I don't know what those are or how they work...

Is it acceptable to use maybe a 1/4" hard cover 3-ring binder? I just wasn't sure if it's okay to 3-hole punch everything.

No, it is not acceptable to 3-hole punch everything. The solution is as simple as putting the stack of papers in the right size envelope. They only need to stay in order until opened. USCIS will build their own file. If you want something more secure, Google "binder clip".

I just used good old paperclips & let the USCIS deal with the filing themselves. I figured I was already paying them too much money for my approval alone.

Acco clips are not binder clips either. You can get them at any office supply store like Office Depot or Staples.

You will need the two hole punch to go with them and make sure you get the right size of Acco clips because they make many sizes.

Since they also want the tabs across the bottom of the file, not down the side, you can get blank divider sheets or just use blank sheets of paper, and buy a pack of the tabs that stick on to put across the bottom. Then you can have a tab for each item listed in your cover letter.

They don't require the acco fasteners or two-hole punching, dividers or tabs. All those are optional but they suggest if you USE tabs, put them at the bottom. Those of us who have been to an AOS interview have seen our complete USCIS files, so please trust that all you need to do is package the papers in a way they will stay in order until they open your package. After that, they assemble the file their way, no matter what you did.

I just used paper clips and used small post-it notes accross the top next to each paper clip. The nots were labeled per the sections they were attached to...Easy to figure out and they will do as they need to put the package together their way.

We just stacked everything together and put an elastic around it and put it in the envelope. We didn't have any problems. Our thought was that if they had to take time to separate clips and such that we might get put in the "when I have more time" pile! LOL

Yes it is OK, don't use staples. Actually they will disasemble anything you do and put it in their own file. Just make sure everything is there and separate it with paper clips and hold the whole package together with a binder clip. It is all you need. I attached a cover letter (exactly the example on this site) with a "table of contents". This is optional, but why not?

i used 2-hole fasteners place on the top part and tabs at the bottom of the paper. Arranged in the order they are written in the cover letter (like a table of contents on the first page). Our petition wasn't that thick.. just 1/2 of an inch thick.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

LOL... it will be difficult to read that way, eh? :)

They make the ACCO clips in two sizes (at least the store I was at). Hopefully, I have the right size.
