While I don't disagree with ppl being cautious with what you and your SO eats...I mean if that's what you're into. I don't think it's entirely fair to force family to adjust their dietary behaviors to your or your SO's liking. It could cause some resentment especially if the family members are new to the idea of eating "halal" or being around Muslims etc. Perhaps bring a dish or two of your liking to family gatherings so that you and your SO are guaranteed something you'll eat.

I left it up to my husband to decide what he wanted to do regarding halal foods or not. I let him know that there are foods that contain non-halal meat products that you wouldn't easily guess would (refried beans, sausages, gelatin, apple juice, etc). And if he had questions to ask. But ultimately he was the Muslim and it was up to him to make the choice what he wanted to eat or not or whether he cared enough to read every label or not.

At family gatherings that had food that contained something he wouldn't eat, he would eat the side dishes instead.

Thats our plan. I will bring dishes to family gatherings for him to eat, I will make enough for everyone so its not akward, like: NO! this is for Yazied! lol

food for thought for anyone also, at family gatherings...prayers before the meal: my family always says grace over the food before we sit and eat.. find a solution to that before he comes. Even if you bring, cook halal..but then "in jesus name" is said over the food..he may not eat it

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

that's very true. and i'm adamantly against making my food choices someone else's problem. if a guy doesn't want to eat something, then it's up to him to figure out how to avoid it.

That is the other thing my husband was told but I can't remember the exact content. It had to do with being in America, which is a primarily Christian based country so that had something to do with the meat being "ok" and to say bismillah before u prepare or eat it. Rahma, can you shed some light on that?

Never heard of it, and just IMHO, that sounds really shady.

To go on a tangent, this is why, again IMHO, it's so important for people either to select a particular school of thought to adhere to, or research a scholar they know is on the up and up, and stick to those opinions. If someone doesn't have time to research the basis of the opinions, at least they trust the source they come from, and hopefully won't get hoodwinked.

That he does not slaughter it by the way specified by shari'ah as is the case if he chokes it or electrocutes it until it dies or drowns it in water until it dies or kills it by a bullet, etc. In this case there is no doubt that eating it is forbidden since it is maita (meat of an animal that has died without properly being slaughtered) and Allah has forbidden it in the Qur'an (interpretation of the meaning): "… and forbidden unto you is maita…" (al-Maa'ida:3)

The above fatwa comes from Al-Munajid's website.

Also, see below for the slaughter process in the US which states that the animals are electrocuted and then shot in the head with a bullet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slaughterhouse

Not every can be as perfect as you....

Also pretty sure you need a special permit to slaughter it yourself. Having grown up in farming communities many farmers are very hesitant to allow people to slaughter themselves as meat sold in the US is required to be killed in licensed and approved slaughterhouses.

I know

I calmly told my family about my husband and that he didn't eat pork of any kind. They still make their ham but they also make a turkey now. In the beginning, I would get my plate as he was getting his and he'd point to a dish if he wanted to know if it had pork or not and I could shake my head or say yes or no. This kept it quiet and didn't hurt anybodies feelings. We also made sure to bring something that we knew he could eat and brought enough for an army so that if everybody had some, he still had enough to feel full lol

Even if you bring, cook halal..but then "in jesus name" is said over the food..he may not eat it

This never even crossed my mind.

When we have dinner at other homes my family blesses the food with a Christian prayer, and I requested that my husband respect their customs. He merely says Bismillah after they have finished the blessing. He seemed okay with that.
