Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Because we are our brothers keeper?

We are?? I've always had a problem with that concept. Turn it around, do you want to be kept? It smacks of paternalism to me. Children and zoo animals have keepers...

It depends on what kind of Christian attitudes you have. In relation to the argument posed that poor/weak people should die off as some sort of natural selection process - the idea of shared responsibility for addressing such things via charity, humanitarian aid etc isn't terribly controversial. Indeed - its expected.

Add to that the Beatitudes and Jesus' affirmation that "whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers," - the concept of reaching out to others in tantamount to message of the Gospel.

Amen bro, amen I say to you. It is hard for a lot of Christians to deal with this. We'd love to help everyone, but we cannot. At the very least we should encourage those tha can (eg , our govint) to help those less fortunate.

Fascinating concept. I try not to politicize religion but sometimes its really hard to ignore the message, right?

Oh, believe me, I'm in full agreement on the importance of charity, reaching out to others, etc. My problem is with the idea of "brother's keeper" as such. Words mean things. A "keeper" is one who "keeps" or controls another "for their own good." It is not a relationship of equals, but is paternalistic. It is the justification for things like the Drug War, Prohibition in the last century, "sin taxes," determining what people can do in their bedrooms, etc. If we mean we should help each other in times of need, then we should just say that.

It is helpful to consider where the phrase, "My brother's keeper" comes from: In Genesis, when Cain murdered his brother Abel, God asked Cain where his brother was. Cain said, "I do not know, am I my brother's keeper?" in an attempt to hide the fact that he had murdered Abel, and actually did know where Abel was. God didn't punish Cain for not being his brother's "keeper" (Abel was an adult, and didn't need a "keeper"), but for murdering him.

Interesting. In my high school religion class, we were taught that Cain was his brother's keeper. When God asks Cain, "Where is your brother?" He is saying that Cain should be concerned about his brother's well being. Cain callously disregards that familial obligation. Killing his brother is the opposite of caring for him.
