Congratulations to everyone that has gotten their Naturalization this past week and good luck to those with upcoming interview dates.

Everything I respond to is from personal knowledge, research or experience and I am in no means a lawyer or do I claim to be one. Everyone should read, research and be responsible for your own journey.

Hi everyone,

After anxiously waiting 100 days for the interview day, that day finally arrived today. My interview was scheduled for 10:45, and I arrived at 10:20. I had just finish registering at the reception window and had just sat down for 10 seconds or so, when I got called. The officer was an early 30ish man built like a pro football linebacker. I commented to him that it was fast. Meaning I just had arrived and I was already called in. And he replied that he was ahead of schedule. Definitely looked like a no nonsense fellow. Anyway he told me to follow him to his room. As soon as he got behind his desk, he asked me to raise my right hand and swear to tell the truth. Then we both sat and he immediately went through my application after asking me to show my greencard, driver's license, and passport ( I had 2). At the same time while he was looking at his computer screen, he asked me to say my SS number.

He noticed that I had requested a name change. Actually I told him that I wanted to add to my middle name. I had been using my mother's maiden name as a middle name, but in Brasil, we usually have 2 given names, then your mother's maiden name and then your father's name. He then looked at my passport and I told him that the middle name that I wanted included was not in my passport, but I told him it was in my birth certificate. Which I brought along, but he didn't bother to ask to ask for it. If there's anything I learned from all the VisaJourney stories is never to volunteer or raise any information/issue if not asked.

He then proceeded to ask about my present address. I have been staying at the same address for 5 years, so no problem there. All this time, I noted that he only looked at my greencard. None of the other documents. So it was employment history. Although I am still working for the same company that sponsored me 5 years ago, I had listed 2 other employers that I had worked for also on a contractor basis. He just asked if I was working for the same sponsoring company, and I replied in the affirmative.

So it was next to my travels. I had been quite anxious about this portion as I had done 18 trips totaling 591 days in 5 years. Although I was far from 2.5 year limit of being outside the US, I was kinda concerned because of the length of the trips. My longest trip was 65 days and the average was about 40 days. Most of my trips were to Brasil and Asia. Most of them work related. In addition I had gone to the Philippines after getting my fingerprinting, but the officer didn't say anything about the trips. Only question was whether any of my trips had been more than 6 months. And I said none and that was it.

Next set of questions were about my marital history. I'm divorced so he asked me about it. Specifically the reason for my divorce. Told him it was about compatibility issues. Then he checked to see how long I've been divorced, and he confirmed that I've been divorced 3 days short a one year. I then asked if I needed to inform him that my ex wife had just gotten married 2 weeks ago, and he said it had no bearing. Good!

Then he asked me all the questions re good moral character. I said no to everything until he asked about being cited or arrested etc. I left the portion blank as I had consulted with an immigration lawyer and he said that I didn't have to include my traffic violations. But having read many of the interview stories in this forum, I told the officer that I had a moving violation back in December 2004. I had gotten a ticket for an illegal U turn. I told him that I didn't include it because the fine was $120. I had read that only to report fines of $500 and up. He then replied that I should have written it down. All traffic violations or citations must be reported. So that answers the most common question asked in the VJ forums about the N400 application, the necessity of reporting traffic violations or speeding tickets. He asked for the details of the violation, and while I didn not have a copy of the ticket, my reporting it verbally seemed to have satisfied him.

Again it was back to answering the Yes and No questions. About being a member of the communist party etc and the YES questions about serving the US. Then the test. Here are the test questions asked.

1. Who is the present governor of New Jersey?

2. What is one promise you make when you become a United States citizen?

3. What movement tried to end racial discrimination?

4. Who was the first president of the United States?

5. Name two national US holidays

6. Where is the statue of liberty.

Got them all correct and that was the end of the test.

He then got his red rubber stamp and stamped my papers APPROVED. And for the first time he smiled and congratulated me. He then said that I would probably take my oath next week. I was surprised because normally New Jersey is known to have same day oath taking. I asked him about it and he replied that used to be the case but since there were VERY FEW citizenship applicants these days, they didn't have enough people for the same day oath taking. He told me to wait for my name to be called again in the reception area as they were going to schedule me for my oath taking.

I then signed more papers including the new name request form, and then he congratulated me again. I told him I was very happy and this time he gave a hearty laugh. So looks can be deceiving. The officer looked very stern in the begining but he was very pleasant. Imagine all that needless worrying during the last hundred days. I looked at my watch, and the interview had lasted a good 14 minutes.

It was back to the reception area. There were about 20 people and as far as I could gather, most had come for their greencard interviews. After half an hour waiting. A very pleasant lady called me and another interviewee to a hall. Looked like the oath taking venue. She told us that our oath taking schedules had been made, and that I was to have it this Friday, May 29. Again that was fast. She showed us our naturalization certifications and asked us a to sign all these documents. She then told us that since our oath was going to be in a day and a half, we still had to report any traffic violations or speeding tickets if they happened before the oath taking. She said it would not have any bearing on the oath taking but it was important for us to report it. So that confirms again that all traffic violation or speeding tickets have to be reported. That was it, and so Friday is the big day for me again.

Will return to talk about the oath taking after it's over.

Thank really to all of you who have posted your interview experiences. They are really so helpful. Removes lots of the anxiety involved in waiting for the interviews.

I had my interview yesterday around mid afternoon. The interview only lasted less then 10 minutes lol and I was recommended for citizenship, after waiting 30 minutes or so in the hall, I got my oath letter delivered by hand for the 2:00 pm oath ceremony. So my oath was even done the same day! I was expecting this as Atlanta as one of the few states which does the oath same day.

Anyhow, I just wanted to thank you all for your support and the valuable amount of information you provide!!!

Good luck everyone else!

I didn't wait long at all before they called my name and the lady brought me to her office which was almost the last one down this long hallway. I could see other people being interviewed. Everyone kept the doors open.

Raised my right hand and swore to tell the truth.

She asked me some of the questions over from the application. I hadn't put my speeding ticket on it but I told her about it and she said I should have put it on there so make sure you put yours on there. Wasn't a problem though.

She asked me to read one sentence and write down "Lincoln was president during the civil war."

She asked me:

- Who was the vice president now?

- What group of people were brought as slaves?

- What is the highest court in the US?

- What were the colonists fighting the British about?

- How many amendments to the constitution are there?

- Who makes federal laws?

And that was it, got my paper saying congratulations and I should get my oath letter within the next 2 months.

She wasn't very chatty, just down to business but she was nice enough.

So there it is!!

Finally took my oath of citizenship last Friday, May 29. It was a short ceremony but very meaningful. There were only 17 oath takers, but everyone seems to have been moved by the ceremonies. I understand from the officers because of the low numbers of citizenship applicants in South Jersey, they were gathering all those were approved for oath taking during the week and had their swearing on the following Friday. And so I've been doing the samba since Friday night. It's good to be US citizen finally. And congratulations to all those who have been naturalized. Good luck to klebog and marcyny who are having their interviews this week.
