Hello everybody!

I was here in the states with a J-1 visa taking a master's degree, and was able to work, and from then, I have my SSN, so I have my card already, and obviously my SSN. I have always supposed that I do not have to do anything with it until I get my permanent residence and I could remove the restrictions "only to work with INS authorization". Therefore, when I get my EAD, I can just start working, and use that as my SSN, that's it. In any case, I will always have the same SSN, they wouldn'nt change it, would they? that would be weird, because I have been here before, have credit cards, etc, have built some credit, so if they changed it, I would have to change it with my credit card companies, etc, what mess! (although this mess is in my mind, I think ;) )

However, I do not know if I have to update my status with the SSN, or what? somebody?

Thanks!

You think correctly.

"only to work with INS authorization"

Your EAD is authorization. When you get your Green Card you can have the restrictions removed.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Thanks rch99!

Now, I still have the question: do I have to do anything with that SSN [card]?

or should I be quite, use it to work, and that's it, and only after being a LPR, then spend some hours at the Federal Building downtown to remove the restrictions? hehe!

Thanks!

You have a work authorized SSN and card, so nothing needs to be done with SSA until you have proof of permanant residence and can apply for an unresticted card, since I assume you are not changing your name after getting married.
