Or is your whole pity built on the concept that these, bigger game animals are going extinct?

IF this could be proved, to not be the case, would you change your mind?

Well it's easy to argue that a lion's life is "worth" more than say an ant, so I am drawing the (albeit subjective) line somewhere above the groundhog/rabbit example you gave. The caveat would be that I don't condone the indiscriminate killing of any animal. As for the "going extinct" criteria that's part of my reasoning, but the senseless killing of an animal is the main reason.
