In my view this is much more about game control than "hunting", but then I don't consider setting up a feeding station, deer hunting either (not that I am against it).

Seems like folks are perhaps over focused on Wolves, rather than the prey they can decimate as they flounder in snow with no chance of escape from the wolves which easily run on top.

That's wolves for you. However, unlike humans, wolves don't 'decimate' more than they can eat which is why populations of wolves and their prey co exist perfectly happily without human intervention.

:luv: we found something to agree on!

You people who do not live in wolf country are so ignorant. You do not have a clue what is going on.

Here is a video that you all will enjoy.

u know why they hunt them from the air?

Because they are pu$ies and lazy, go on foot and find that animal and let's see who is faster...the hunter or the prey

mano-a-mano

Poor mice and rats when HAL 9000 has to sacrifice them. At least I use anesthesia to do it.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

They eat rabbits here, not those cute little Easter bunny types, but the kind that tear the hell out of your garden.

Do you eat meat? Do you think it's found in nature wrapped up in a neat plastic package? Wolves eat meat, so do humans.

Madame, since you know a lot about these things, why don't you contact the Alaska Dept. of Fish and game and let them know they are doing it all wrong.

Send em your blue print for the, "hands off" approach.

You could be saving untold number of wildlife... don't delay!

That's wolves for you. They go for the long hunt and can spend a day or more wearing down their prey if they need to. Not like big cats, which are built for the quick kill. Wolves can run all day. That said, the kill rate for a Timber Wolf hunt is about 10%. So, no decimation there.

I don't agree with wolf hunting, especially the kind that was recently voted down in Wyoming. If you're going to eat what you kill, then no problem. But if you kill for sport, or to "protect" someone else's sport, then I can't support it. If there isn't enough food to support a wolf population, then it will thin out by natural selection, the way all animal control occurred before man stepped in. We don't need to give nature a hand.

now that i've seen the video, so much for this statement eh?

sure didn't look like that elk was flounding about in any snow to me. Elk retain their antlers throughout the winter, only shedding them with the onset of spring. link maybe that's why it wasn't floudering about in deep snow

So when hunting, wolves will sometimes pressure a herd to move, ensuring that the weak, injured or sick will fall behind. Once that animal falls behind, the pack will sometimes circle around it, cutting it off from the rest of the herd and pressure it until it tires itself. link

Lois Crisler notes in Arctic wild, "In all our time in the arctic, the only healthy caribou we saw or found killed were fawns with big herds." She observed that adult caribou killed had "hoof disease, or lung tapeworm, or nostril-cloging ... botflies." In a 1980 study in northeast Alberta, T. Fuller and L.B. Kieth found that "wolves killed disproportionately more young, old and probably debilitated moose (Ales alces), as well as more female calves."

In fact, the only animal that habitually preys upon prime mature animals is man.

link

personally, i think this uproar about the wolf population is primarily driven by undeducated hunters thinking they'll have more to hunt without wolves. as a hunter, i find this appalling given the studies that show the wolves primarily take down sick, weak, or diseased animals.

eta: for those that think wolves take down moose, deer, and other large animals without a problem, keep in mind that it's not uncommon for a wolf to be kicked while trying to take one of these animals, and die a slow death from that kick.

being an undeducated hunter myself I would love to see the wolf back in New York City or in Washington DC after all didn't they have wolves before them damn politicians came. Personally the only good wolf is a dead one with my bullet in it.

Now that should stir up the bleeding heart liberals.

Seems like you are pairing my comments about prey floundering in deep snow with another persons posted vid.

Haven't we all watched this very thing place take place on the Nature channel?

I recall this happening with packs of wild Dogs in the north East.

The deer get exhausted quickly breaking through the snow while the dogs easily run them down on top of the snow.
