Finding a Job in the America

I'll be moving to Dallas somewhat soonish and I'm just curious as to how long it took everyone to find a job in the States once you had your EAD? Also, when did you get a job? Also, did you notice anything significantly different in the hiring process that you did not expect?

The economy is scaring me. I don't imagine it would be that much different than trying to find a job in Canada, but how would I know? I'm way the hell up here. Thanks!

What kind of industry will you be working in? What kind of job are you looking for? I think that job searching will differ for industry/type of job.

I plan to move in June, hopefully be employable by October and I plan to start seriously job hunting as soon as I get there. But I work in a highly competitive field that requires me to be very proactive and network. I think the recession will hurt my chances, but I'm trying to stay optimistic!

You may want to try associating yourself with a hiring company like Robert Half International. They have been doing ok with me. You may also want to post your resume on a website like CareerBuilder where lots of potential employers look for employees.

It all depends.

I got hired within 2 weeks of having my Greencard but it wasn't my ideal job. I took it because we needed the money.

Then I got a state job which I am working at currently.

The market is really awful right now but just make sure you send in as many resumes as possible. I found that when I wasn't having success with online sites, I went straight to my local paper and did it the old fashion way. I got many responses after that from my local communities.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Just be ready if you're applying online or even on paper - I did not expect to be asked about race, sex etc....in the name of NOT discriminating of course. Usually you can opt out of not filling in those sections. I found it highly UN constitutional so I skipped them :)

I'm in IT so it's fairly standard to be applying through the company Career portal. Didn't notice anything different when being hired otherwise.

Good luck.

I began looking for a job as soon as I got my EAD, and 1 week later I had my green card interview. I was hired 2 days after my interview and recieved many call backs from other employers. I began as a front desk agent at a midsize Hampton Inn, which sucked for me because I came from a management position at a large hotel in Canada. But I worked my way up to Sales Manager within a couple of months.

Take what you can get and make something of it.

I quit that job due to many reasons and two weeks after that I got the job where I am currently working.

I personally didn't find it difficult, at first I took what I could get and then moved on to something bigger and better later.

Donne moi une poptart!

The three most important factors of any job:

1. You like it (or at least you don't hate it).

2. You've got upwards mobility.

3. You get benefits.

Those are listed in no particular order. I think upwards mobility is the most important. No matter how much you like your job or what benefits you gain, if there's no chance of promotion, you'll be stuck in the same position for however long you work there.
