We did not...

Ask the crowd control officer as to which line they want you in...

YMMV

from my understanding you have to show the brown envelope to one of the immigration bodies herding people into the correct lanes...they will then take you through into a seperate interview area.

at some POE's possibly... my wife went through the USC line as directed by the crowd control officer (the same as every USC) BEFORE being sent to secondary inspection

I went straight through the visitors line.

I declared my stuff in general terms, like 'clothes $...' 'books $...' and the total cash i had on me. They put a red ring around the total amount at immigration and when I handed the form in again at the customs desk they asked me a couple of questions but that was it. No problem!

About the customs form: We were traveling together and had six suitcases between us. I called Customs and Border Protection at Houston to ask about the form. I spoke to the supervisor on duty. He said you don't have to list items or values. Just write "household items" on the form.

You might can find a number for your POE airport here http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contact...ts/cbp_psml.xml

Or this is a very extensive list of links. Scroll down and you'll see a list of states. Then you have to search around because you will find listing for cargo, imports, seaport (if any) and should find something about the airport. The listing for Houston is long, but the right one says Air Passenger Processing-Bush Intercontinental Airport so look for something similar. http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contacts/ports/

When you get somebody on the phone, tell them you are going to be entering on a K1 visa and have some questions. You can ask your question about what line, etc. Probably visitors line because you don't have a green card yet. But they all do the same thing and may direct you differently depending on their set up.
